Barking and Dagenham built modern Britain in a very literal sense — the Ford Dagenham plant was once one of the largest car factories in Europe, and the borough's interwar housing estates were some of the biggest of their kind. Barking itself has real history too: the ruins of Barking Abbey, once one of the most important religious houses in England, still stand near the town centre, alongside a busy street market and riverside walks along the Thames.
