The Square Mile, covered door to door
The City of London — the Square Mile, or simply "the City" — is not one of the 32 London boroughs that make up the rest of Greater London. It's a separate, ancient local authority in its own right, governed by the City of London Corporation, headed by the Lord Mayor and based at the Guildhall, with its own dedicated police force distinct from the Metropolitan Police that covers the rest of the capital. Just 1.12 square miles in area, home to around 8,600 residents but well over 600,000 daily workers, it's the historic core from which the whole of modern London grew.
Within that square mile sits an extraordinary concentration of history and finance: St Paul's Cathedral, the Bank of England, the Tower of London on its eastern edge, and modern landmarks like the Gherkin and the Walkie-Talkie rising above medieval street patterns.
