Cheltenham Festival transfers: 135 miles, four days, one plan
Cheltenham is the furthest most Kent racegoers travel for a single afternoon, and a lot of them do it four days running. Whether you are doing one day, the full festival or just the Gold Cup, the distance changes everything about how the trip is put together.
Each way, from north Kent to Prestbury Park. That is two and a half hours on a good run and considerably more in festival traffic, which is why the departure time is the single most important decision of the day.
Which day you have changes the whole trip
The festival builds through the week, and so does the traffic, the crowd and the difficulty of getting near the course. This is what each day means in practice.
Champion Day
Opening day and the famous roar at the first race. Big crowd, early arrivals, and the day worth leaving Kent in the dark for.
Style Wednesday
Slightly calmer, a strong crowd, and generally the easiest of the four for access and exit. A good choice for a first festival visit.
St Patrick's Thursday
A large Irish contingent, a superb atmosphere and a considerably later finish than the racecard suggests. Book the return late.
Gold Cup Day
The biggest day in jump racing and the busiest roads of the week. Earliest departure, latest return, and the date our coaches commit first.
Day trip, overnight or the full week
At this distance the shape of the trip matters more than the vehicle. These are the three ways Kent groups usually do Cheltenham, with the honest trade-offs of each.
| Format | What it involves | Works best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single day return | Leave around six in the morning, home well after midnight | One-day tickets, hardy groups, and anyone who does not want a hotel bill. |
| Overnight, one night | Travel down the evening before, race, then return | Gold Cup Friday, where the early start otherwise starts on Thursday. |
| Multi-day with hotel runs | Coach down, daily transfers between hotel and course, coach home | Groups doing two or more days. Accommodation is usually Gloucester, Tewkesbury or further out. |
| Course-only shuttle | You arrange travel down, we handle the local legs | Anyone driving down independently who wants to drink at the racing. |
Getting there, and when to leave
The route is the M25 and then the M40 or the M4 and A417, and the last twenty miles into Cheltenham are where festival week bites. Leave-by times below assume a midday arrival, which is what you want for the first race.

Doing Cheltenham properly from Kent
The early start is the hard part, not the racing
A day trip to the festival means leaving before seven and getting home after midnight, and that is fine for one day and punishing for four. Groups who do the whole week almost always stay locally, and the sensible pattern is a coach down on the Monday or Tuesday, daily runs between the hotel and Prestbury Park, and a coach home at the end. That way nobody spends eight hours on the road on top of a day at the races.
Accommodation is rarely in Cheltenham
Rooms in the town itself are limited and priced accordingly during festival week, so most groups end up in Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Evesham or further out. That makes the daily transfer to the course a genuine requirement rather than a convenience, especially given nobody in a racing party wants to nominate a driver. We run these local legs alongside the long-haul travel as one booking.
The traffic into Prestbury Park is the known problem
Cheltenham's approach roads carry a very large number of vehicles into a relatively small area over a short window, and the A435 and A46 back up substantially. Our departure times allow for it rather than hoping. Getting out afterwards is slower still, which is why we set collection points on roads outside the immediate congestion and accept a short walk in exchange.
Coaches book out months ahead
Festival week and Gold Cup Friday in particular are among the earliest dates to commit in our diary, alongside the Six Nations. If your group goes every year, book the whole week at once in the autumn. A provisional reservation costs nothing to adjust and it means you are not ringing round in February hoping.
Cheltenham Festival travel questions
Distance, timings and whether to stay over.
How far is Cheltenham from Kent?
About a hundred and thirty-five miles from north Kent, and up to a hundred and seventy from east Kent. That is three to five hours each way in festival traffic depending on where you start and which day you go. It is comfortably the longest single-day trip we run.
Is a day trip realistic?
For one day, yes, if you accept leaving before seven in the morning and getting home after midnight. For two or more days it becomes punishing, and most groups stay locally instead. We are happy to do either and will tell you honestly which we think suits your plan.
Do you do multi-day trips with hotel transfers?
Yes, and it is the most sensible way to do the festival from Kent. A coach down at the start, daily runs between your accommodation and the course, and a coach home at the end, all on one booking with one invoice.
What time do we need to leave for Gold Cup Friday?
Earlier than any other day. From north Kent, around seven in the morning. From east Kent, half six. Gold Cup Friday brings the heaviest traffic of the week onto the Cheltenham approaches, and arriving late is a genuinely miserable way to start.
Can you take a coach load?
Yes, up to forty-nine seats, with multiple vehicles run as one job for larger parties. Racing clubs, pub syndicates and works groups make up most of our festival bookings and they all travel better together than split across cars.
How early should we book?
Months. Festival week and Gold Cup Friday are among the first dates to fill our diary each year. If your group goes annually, book in the autumn for the following March and adjust the details later.
Where will you collect us after racing?
From a point outside the immediate congestion around Prestbury Park, which means a short walk in exchange for a much shorter wait. Getting out of Cheltenham is slower than getting in, and a vehicle inside the queue is not helping anybody.
Will the driver wait if we stay for a drink?
Yes, and at Cheltenham that is close to guaranteed. The bars stay busy well after the last race, particularly on the Thursday. We plan the return late rather than early and the fare does not change.
Can you collect from several addresses across Kent?
Yes. Multiple pick-ups on the way out are standard for a long trip like this, and it saves everyone driving to one meeting point at half six in the morning. Build it in when we quote.
What if the meeting is abandoned?
Let us know as soon as you do. Jump racing in March is weather-dependent and abandonments happen. We will move the booking or cancel it without a fee subject to our normal notice period.
