Short answer: on a normal December day the cheapest way to the airport is the same as always: the Tube or Elizabeth line to Heathrow, the Thameslink or Gatwick Express to Gatwick, the Stansted Express or a coach to Stansted. Over the holiday itself the timetable falls apart. On Christmas Day nothing runs, Boxing Day is partial, and New Year's Eve closes half the West End to traffic. For those days, and for any early flight or any group with luggage, a pre-booked fixed-price car per vehicle is the cheapest reliable option, and it costs the same on 25 December as on any other day.

The car is priced per vehicle, not per seat, which is why it wins as soon as there are three of you. A saloon takes four with two large cases; an MPV takes six.
Neither is a bad choice on a quiet afternoon, and both are a gamble at the moments that matter: after a late landing, on Christmas week, in the rain, or when three flights land together and the price surges while you queue at the kerb. The practical difference with a pre-booked fixed-price car is that the fare is set before you fly, the driver is inside the terminal with your name, and the first hour of waiting is free, so a delayed flight does not turn into a cancelled ride.
