Short answer: December is London at its most beautiful and its most expensive, and it ends with the one day of the year when public transport stops completely. Plan the three big things first: your airport transfer for Christmas week (there is no Tube on 25 December), your New Year's Eve arrangements, and any timed-entry Christmas attraction. The rest of the month looks after itself.
Typical December days run from 4 to 9°C with around 11 days of measurable rain. The real challenge is the light: sunrise is after 08:00 and sunset is around 15:55 at the winter solstice on 21 December, so plan outdoor sightseeing before 15:00 and keep the lights, markets and theatre for the long evenings. Snow that settles is rare, two or three days a year, but pavements are often wet and slippery, so pack boots with grip.

Every year visitors are caught out. On 25 December there is no Tube, no bus, no DLR, no Overground, no Elizabeth line and no tram. Most shops, restaurants and museums are shut. App taxis are running but at two to three times the normal fare, and black cabs are scarce. The Heathrow Express runs a reduced service; the Gatwick Express, Stansted Express and Luton services generally do not run at all. Boxing Day is only slightly better, with a partial timetable and no Night Tube.
If you are flying on Christmas Day or early on Boxing Day, a pre-booked private hire car is the only arrangement you can rely on. Attraction and transport prices barely move, but hotels do. When to Wander's 2026 tracking puts a mid-range 3-star at roughly £120 to £180 a night up to 22 December, £200 to £320 over Christmas week, and £400 to £600 for the nights around New Year's Eve. If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December give you all the lights and markets at the lowest prices and the smallest crowds; the week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the whole winter.
TfL's Zone 1 to 2 daily cap is £8.90 and the weekly cap £44.70 (from March 2026), so a contactless card is all you need for the Tube. For the airport, a fixed-price car per vehicle is usually cheaper than four Heathrow Express tickets once there are three or more of you with luggage.

Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby switch on in early to mid November and stay lit until early January. The Trafalgar Square tree, a gift from Norway every year since 1947, is lit on the first Thursday of December, which in 2026 is 3 December.
