Short answer: the money goes on three things: the dates you pick, the way you move around, and the tickets you buy without checking. Come in the first half of December, use the transport caps, book the midweek slots, and pre-book the one journey that public transport cannot do. Everything else in London at Christmas is either free or the same price it always is.
