Planning New Year's Eve
Consider whether you actually want central London
This is worth asking honestly. The fireworks are genuinely spectacular and the evening around them involves standing in a cold, packed viewing area for hours and then walking half an hour in a crowd to reach a vehicle. A restaurant or a party at a fixed venue is a considerably better night for most groups, and a good pub in Kent is better still for some.
If you are going, book everything in October
Fireworks tickets, the restaurant and the vehicle. By early December there is nothing left across the south east at any sensible price, and the people who left it late spend the night discovering what surge pricing means. We are turning bookings away by the first week of December every single year.
The collection is agreed in advance, not on the night
Mobile networks in central London at midnight on the thirty-first are effectively unusable, and a plan that depends on ringing the driver is not a plan. We agree a named point outside the closures, a realistic time well after midnight and a fallback, all of it weeks beforehand. Then nobody needs a phone.
Expect to walk, and dress for it
There is no arrangement in which a vehicle collects you near the river. Twenty to thirty minutes on foot through a large slow crowd is the realistic picture, at one in the morning, on the last day of December. Proper coats and shoes that will manage it, and a group that has agreed to stay together.
