bp pulse LIVE: not in Birmingham, whatever the name says

London black cab parked beside a red telephone box

This arena has had four names in fifteen years and all of them say Birmingham. It is actually on the NEC campus beside Birmingham International station, nine miles from the city centre, and people book hotels in the wrong place every single tour.

9 miles

Between this arena and Birmingham city centre. That is a twenty-minute drive, or an evening spent realising your restaurant booking is in the wrong place. It is the single most useful fact about the venue.

Four names, one building

You may know it by a different name

Whatever your ticket says, it is the same arena on the same campus.

THE NEC ARENA

Originally

Which is the most accurate description of where it actually is.

What being on the NEC campus means

The location is the whole story here, and it works in your favour once you know it.

bp pulse LIVE access
FeatureWhat it means for you
Beside Birmingham International stationDirect trains, and a covered walk. Genuinely good access for an arena.
On the NEC exhibition campusEnormous managed car parks and a road layout built for crowds.
Off the M42, junction 6Straight off the motorway. No city driving at all from Kent.
Nine miles from the city centreHotels, restaurants and nightlife are not walkable. Plan around that.
Adjacent to Birmingham AirportWhich matters if anyone is flying in for the show.

Kent to the NEC campus

Slightly shorter than the city-centre arena because you leave the motorway earlier.

Planning around the location

Book your hotel on the right campus

This is the mistake, and it is expensive. People see Birmingham on the ticket, book a hotel in the Jewellery Quarter, and then discover their arena is nine miles away with a show finishing at half ten. There are hotels on and around the NEC campus. If you want a city-centre stay, that is fine, but plan the transfer both ways rather than assuming you can walk.

Eat on the campus or before you arrive

There is on-site catering and there are hotel restaurants, and beyond that the campus is a campus. If you want a proper meal beforehand, either build a stop into the journey up or accept that Birmingham city centre is a twenty-minute detour each way. Tell us which and we will plan it in.

The access is genuinely good

Once you accept where it is, this is one of the better-served arenas in the country. Off the M42 at junction six, straight into managed parking, with a railway station beside the doors. Fifteen thousand people leave it far more smoothly than they leave most venues its size.

Same approach as the NEC itself

If you have ever been to a trade show at the NEC, this is the same road layout, the same car parks and the same exit routes. Anything you have learned there applies here.

bp pulse LIVE questions

Almost all of them about where it actually is.

Is bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham city centre?

No, and this is the thing to know. It is on the NEC campus at B40, about nine miles from the centre, beside Birmingham International station. Hotels and restaurants in the city are not walkable from it.

Is this the same as the Utilita Arena?

No. The Utilita Arena is in central Birmingham at B1 by the canals. bp pulse LIVE is at the NEC. They are separate venues nine miles apart.

I have a ticket that says Resorts World Arena. Same place?

Yes. It has also been the Genting Arena and the NEC Arena. Same building, same campus.

How far is it from Kent?

Around a hundred and forty to a hundred and eighty miles, two and a half to three and a half hours each way. Slightly shorter than the city-centre arena because you leave the M42 earlier.

Where should we stay?

On or around the NEC campus if you want to be close. If you prefer the city centre, that is fine, but arrange the transfer both ways rather than assuming a short walk.

Can we eat beforehand?

On the campus, or with a stop built into the journey up. The city centre is a twenty-minute detour each way, which we can plan in if you want it.

Can we combine it with a flight?

Yes. Birmingham Airport is adjacent to the campus, which makes that pairing unusually easy.

Is the fare fixed?

Yes, agreed before travel, and unaffected by traffic or a late finish.

Date, head count and where you are staying. We will make sure the transfer matches the venue rather than the name on the ticket.
