Sheffield: the most reachable northern arena
Of every arena north of Birmingham, this is the one that is easiest to get to from Kent. A hundred and ninety miles straight up the M1, a site built beside the motorway with its own parking and tram stop, and none of the city-centre complication the others involve.
From north Kent, and almost all of it on one motorway. It is fifty miles closer than Manchester and a hundred and ten closer than Newcastle, which puts a day return back on the table.

Getting a Sheffield evening right
A day return is genuinely reasonable here
At three and a half to four and a half hours each way, Sheffield sits at the boundary where turning round the same night stops being punishing. Leave Kent mid-afternoon, show at eight, home between half two and three. That is a long night rather than an ordeal, and it saves the cost of a room.
The location does the work
Most arenas make you negotiate a city. This one sits beside junction 34 of the M1 with its own car parks and a tram stop at the door. For a driver coming from Kent that is close to ideal, and it means the exit afterwards is onto a motorway rather than into a one-way system.
Consider Meadowhall or the centre for food
There is not a great deal immediately around the arena itself. Meadowhall is two miles away and the city centre about three, and either makes a sensible earlier stop. Build it into the booking and it costs nothing extra.
A good first northern trip
If your group has never done a long arena run from Kent, this is the one to start with. It is the shortest, the road access is the simplest, and the day return actually works. Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle are all a step up from here.
