Hillsborough: Sheffield's other ground
Sheffield has two large football grounds on opposite sides of the city, and people book transport to the wrong one. Hillsborough sits north west in the Don valley at Owlerton; Bramall Lane is south of the centre. They are around four miles apart with a city in between.
Between Sheffield's two grounds, with the city centre between them. Arriving at the wrong one is not a short walk, and on a matchday the roads across the middle of Sheffield are not quick. Name the ground when you book.
Hillsborough or Bramall Lane?
The most useful thing to establish before anything else about the day.
S6, Owlerton, north west
Sheffield Wednesday. In the Don valley on Penistone Road, about three miles from the centre.
S2, south of the centre
Sheffield United. Ten minutes' walk from Sheffield station.
With a city between
Not a walk, and not a quick drive on a matchday. Check your ticket.
At the ground
Many visitors wish to see it. If your group intends to, allow time before kick-off rather than after.

A ground in a valley
Hillsborough sits low, beside the River Don, with the ground on one side of Penistone Road and residential Owlerton around it.
| Feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Penistone Road | The main artery north west out of Sheffield. It carries the matchday traffic. |
| The River Don | Runs beside the site. The valley limits the approaches. |
| Owlerton, residential | Matchday parking controls across the surrounding streets. |
| Supertram nearby | Which takes a share of the crowd towards the centre. |
| We collect off Penistone Road | On side roads where a vehicle can wait and pull away. |
A Hillsborough away day
Name the ground, not the city
Four miles and a city centre separate Sheffield's two grounds, and a Saturday afternoon is not the time to discover you are at the wrong one. It takes a second to say Hillsborough or Bramall Lane when you book, and it removes the only genuine risk of the day.
Penistone Road is the constraint
The ground sits on the main road north west out of Sheffield, in a valley beside the Don, which means the approaches are limited by geography as much as by traffic management. We hold on side roads off Penistone Road where a vehicle can actually wait, and the walk out is around ten minutes.
Allow time for the memorial
The memorial at the ground is something a good many visiting supporters wish to see, and it is better done before kick-off with time in hand than in the crush afterwards. If your group intends to, tell us and we will set the arrival earlier. It costs nothing and it makes for a better day.
A manageable northern trip
At three and three quarter to four and three quarter hours each way, Hillsborough sits alongside Bramall Lane and Nottingham as a northern fixture you can do without a hotel for an afternoon kick-off. Home by half nine for a three o'clock is realistic.
Hillsborough questions
Which ground, and how to reach it.
Is Hillsborough the same as Bramall Lane?
No. Hillsborough is Sheffield Wednesday's ground in S6 at Owlerton, north west of the city. Bramall Lane is Sheffield United's, in S2 south of the centre. They are about four miles apart with the city between them.
How far is it from Kent?
Around a hundred and ninety to two hundred and thirty miles, three and three quarter to five and a quarter hours each way including required rest breaks.
Can we do it as a day return?
Yes, for an afternoon kick-off. Home by around half nine for a three o'clock, which makes it one of the more manageable northern away days.
Where do you collect afterwards?
On side roads off Penistone Road where a vehicle can wait and pull away. The walk out is around ten minutes.
Can we visit the memorial?
Many visiting supporters do. It is better done before kick-off with time in hand than afterwards. Tell us and we will set the arrival earlier at no extra cost.
Is there parking near the ground?
Matchday controls cover the residential streets around Owlerton. The Supertram takes a share of the crowd towards the city centre.
What about a Sheffield derby?
A different day entirely, with changed policing and traffic management. Tell us if that is your fixture and book early.
Is the fare fixed?
Yes, agreed before travel and unaffected by motorway delays or added time.
