Thruxton: the fastest circuit in Britain

thruxton transfers fixed-price taxi booking with Rushxo

Thruxton is another wartime airfield turned racing circuit, and it is the quickest in the country by a clear margin, with long sweeping curves taken at speeds no other British track allows. It also runs only a handful of race meetings a year, because of the noise restrictions that come with a rural Hampshire setting.

Few dates

Noise restrictions limit the number of full race meetings Thruxton can hold each year. That makes the calendar short, the dates fixed a long way ahead, and vehicles for those weekends worth booking early.

A short calendar

Why Thruxton is different

Most circuits race most weekends. This one does not, and that shapes the whole booking.

NOISE RESTRICTIONS

Rural Hampshire

Which cap the number of full race meetings the circuit can hold each year.

A SHORT SEASON

Handful of dates

Fixed well in advance, and they draw a crowd because there are so few of them.

THE FASTEST IN BRITAIN

By a clear margin

Long sweeping curves and very high average speeds. There is nothing else like it here.

CLOSE TO KENT, RELATIVELY

Under three hours

Which makes it one of the easier circuits for us after Brands Hatch and Goodwood.

Kent to Hampshire

M25 and M3 then west past Basingstoke. A straightforward run on familiar roads.

A day at Thruxton

Book the date as soon as it is announced

This is the practical difference from every other circuit on our list. Thruxton's noise restrictions mean only a few full race meetings a year, the dates are known well in advance, and they draw a crowd precisely because they are scarce. Vehicles for those specific weekends go early, and there is no alternative date to fall back on if you miss it.

The speed is genuinely worth seeing

Thruxton's long curves produce the highest average speeds of any British circuit, and watching cars and bikes carry that kind of pace through a corner is a different experience from a stop-start modern track. If your group has only been to Brands Hatch, this is the one that will surprise them.

Airfield weather again

Like Snetterton, this is a flat former airfield with limited cover and not much to break the wind. It is milder than Norfolk and it is still exposed, so layers and waterproofs belong in the vehicle whatever the forecast said on Thursday.

Two and a half hours makes it easy

On the M25 and M3 past Basingstoke, this is one of the more comfortable circuit days we run and comfortably a day return. Leave mid-morning, watch a full meeting, and be home in the evening without anyone having driven or parked in a field.

Thruxton questions

Scarce dates and high speeds.

Why does Thruxton only race a few times a year?

Noise restrictions, which come with a rural Hampshire setting, cap the number of full race meetings the circuit can hold. The calendar is short and the dates are fixed well in advance.

Does that affect booking transport?

Yes. Those specific weekends draw a crowd and vehicles go early, and there is no alternative date to fall back on. Book as soon as the calendar is announced.

What makes it the fastest circuit in Britain?

Long sweeping curves taken at speeds no other British track allows, producing the highest average lap speeds in the country.

How far is Thruxton from Kent?

Around ninety-five to a hundred and forty miles, roughly two to three and a half hours each way on the M25 and M3.

Can we do it as a day return?

Comfortably. Leave mid-morning, watch a full meeting and be home in the evening. It is one of the easier circuit days we run.

What should we bring?

Layers and waterproofs. It is a flat former airfield with limited cover and not much to break the wind, whatever the forecast said earlier in the week.

How does it compare with Brands Hatch?

Very different. Brands is short, tight and twenty minutes away. Thruxton is fast and open, and worth the drive for anyone who has only seen the local circuit.

Is the fare fixed?

Yes, agreed before travel and unaffected by traffic or delays at the circuit.

Short calendar, so book the date early

Meeting, date and head count. There are only a few Thruxton weekends a year.
