Speedway: two hours, and it's over
Speedway is the motorsport that does not fit any of the patterns on the rest of this site. Four riders, four laps, no brakes, on a shale oval. Fifteen heats back to back, a full meeting done inside two hours, usually on a weeknight. It is the most efficient evening in British sport.
Of four laps each, run back to back with barely a pause between them. There is no long build-up, no support programme to sit through and no waiting around. You arrive, it starts, and two hours later you are on your way home.
Why speedway is a different booking

Planning a speedway night
The sport is shorter than the journey
This is the thing to plan around. Two hours of racing is often less time than the travelling either side, which changes the calculation: the value is in nobody driving, nobody parking on a verge in the dark, and everybody being able to have a drink. It works best as a group booking precisely because the fare splits well across a short, cheap evening.
A weeknight fixture suits a fixed return
Speedway runs to a schedule and finishes when it says it will, near enough. That makes it a straightforward booking with a set collection time, much like a T20 cricket night. There is no open return and no holding fee, and because the venues are small we can collect close by rather than fifteen minutes' walk away.
Rain-offs are a genuine risk
A wet shale track is unsafe and meetings are called off, sometimes at short notice on the day. We agree cancellation terms when you book rather than on the night, which is fairer than either side arguing about it at six o'clock while looking at the sky.
Do not wear anything you care about
Riders throw shale off the back wheel and the first few rows get a share of it. It brushes off and it is part of the evening, and people who arrive in a good coat are the only ones who mind. Ear protection is the other thing worth bringing, because there are no silencers and it is genuinely loud at close quarters.

How long does a speedway meeting last?
About two hours, with fifteen heats of four laps run back to back and one interval. It is the shortest motorsport event you can attend.
When are meetings held?
Usually on weeknights, which puts speedway in the evening-out bracket rather than the day-trip bracket.
How does the return work?
A set collection time, usually from around quarter to ten. Speedway finishes when it says it will, and the venues are small enough that we can collect close by.
What happens if it rains?
A wet shale track is unsafe and meetings get called off, sometimes at short notice on the day. We agree cancellation terms when you book rather than on the night.
Is it loud?
