Newbury: the course with its own station

newbury races transfers fixed-price taxi booking with Rushxo

Newbury Racecourse has a railway station inside its grounds, which is not something any other major British course can say. It also races over both codes, flat through the summer and jumps through the winter, which makes it two quite different venues depending on when you visit.

Both codes

Flat racing in the summer and National Hunt through the winter, including one of the season's major staying chases in late autumn. The same course in July and December offers two entirely different days out, and you dress for them differently.

Winter jumps is the specialty

Summer flat, winter jumps

Most people picture racing in July. A good half of Newbury's calendar happens in the cold.

SUMMER FLAT

May to September

Warm evenings, lighter clothing, and the conventional race day.

WINTER JUMPS

November to March

Cold, often wet, and a completely different crowd and atmosphere.

THE BIG WINTER MEETING

Late autumn

A major staying chase and one of the highlights of the National Hunt season.

A STATION IN THE GROUNDS

Genuinely unusual

Which takes a share of the crowd and eases the roads considerably.

Kent to Berkshire

M25 anticlockwise and west on the M4. Familiar roads and a straightforward run.

A winter jumps day

Standing outdoors in December is a different proposition, and worth preparing for properly.

A day at Newbury

Under two hours makes it easy

Newbury sits west along the M4 at around ninety miles from most of Kent, which puts it comfortably within a relaxed day out. Leave late morning, race all afternoon, home in the evening. Among the courses with proper Grade One racing it is one of the two or three most convenient from our patch.

Winter meetings need real preparation

A December jumps card means several hours largely outdoors in the cold and often the wet, and the people who enjoy it are the ones who dressed for it. Layers, waterproof footwear and a coat that will actually keep the weather out. Those coats also take up space, so tell us at the booking stage and we will size the vehicle for winter rather than for July.

Frost and waterlogging can abandon a meeting

National Hunt racing in Britain loses fixtures to the weather every season, sometimes with a morning inspection deciding it. We agree cancellation terms when you book, so a called-off meeting is a known arrangement rather than a conversation at eight o'clock on a freezing Saturday.

The station in the grounds helps everybody

Not because you will use it, but because a good share of the crowd does, which keeps the approach roads noticeably clearer than at a course of similar size without one. It is one of the reasons Newbury is easier to get in and out of than its size would suggest.

Newbury Races questions

Two codes, two seasons.

Does Newbury really have its own station?

Yes, inside the racecourse grounds, which no other major British course can say. A good share of the crowd uses it, which keeps the approach roads clearer than you would expect.

Does Newbury race over jumps or on the flat?

Both. Flat racing from around May to September and National Hunt from November to March, including a major staying chase in late autumn.

How far is Newbury from Kent?

Around eighty to a hundred and twenty-five miles, roughly an hour and three quarters to three and a quarter hours on the M25 and M4.

What should we wear for a winter meeting?

Layers, waterproof footwear and a proper coat. A December jumps card means several hours largely outdoors in the cold and often the wet.

Do winter coats affect the vehicle size?

They do, more than people expect. Six people in full winter kit fill a vehicle differently. Tell us at booking and we will size for the season.

What if the meeting is abandoned?

Frost and waterlogging call off National Hunt fixtures every season, sometimes on a morning inspection. We agree cancellation terms when you book rather than on the day.

How does the return work?

A set collection time. Race cards are published in advance and the crowd leaves within twenty minutes of the last race.

Is the fare fixed?

Yes, agreed at booking, with the abandonment terms set out in advance.
