Short answer: London no longer has a five-day rush hour. Since hybrid working settled in, the crush is concentrated on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the worst single half hour is 08:00 to 08:30. Mondays are noticeably lighter and Fridays are the quietest weekday of all. If you are booking an airport transfer, a meeting run or a station pick-up, the day of the week now matters as much as the hour.
A September 2026 feature on Londontopia pulled together Transport for London ridership data and Centre for Cities office-attendance research. The pattern is striking:

That 20-point gap between a Wednesday and a Friday is why the same Tube carriage can feel like a scrum one day and half-empty two days later. The big commuter terminals feel it most: Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Waterloo and Bank all see their sharpest peaks midweek.
Hybrid working did it. Most employers that ask for office days ask for two or three, and both staff and managers gravitate to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: Monday is used for a quiet start at home and Friday for an early finish. The result is a working week that has been squeezed into three days on the transport network, even though total ridership is still below 2019 levels.
It also explains something regular passengers have noticed: the "Friday feeling" now starts on Thursday evening, with bars, restaurants and taxi demand in the West End peaking on Thursday nights rather than Fridays.
Road traffic follows the same calendar as the Tube, just with softer edges. A few practical consequences we see every week:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. TfL figures reported in September 2026 show Monday mornings carry about 14% fewer passengers than the midweek peak and Friday mornings about 28% fewer, because hybrid workers concentrate their office days midweek.
Roughly 07:00 to 09:30 into central London and 16:00 to 19:00 outwards, with the 08:00 to 08:30 half hour the single most crowded slot. TfL says 07:30 to 08:00 is around 20% quieter than the following half hour.
Between about 09:00 and 16:30 on weekdays, after 18:45 in the evening, and on Fridays and Mondays generally. Saturday and Sunday mornings are busy on the roads around airports and shopping districts, so they are not automatically quiet.
