Short answer: the best of London at Christmas is free. The lights, the Trafalgar Square tree, the carols, the Southbank market, the big museums and the best views of the city cost nothing. Save your money for one ticketed evening (Kew, a panto or an ice rink) and one good dinner, and spend the rest on foot.
Start at Oxford Circus after 16:30, when it is dark. Walk east along Oxford Street to Bond Street, down New Bond Street for the most photographed shop fronts, through Burlington Arcade to Piccadilly, back up Regent Street under the angels, into Carnaby Street, then east through Soho to Seven Dials and Covent Garden for the tree and the carol singers. Finish at Trafalgar Square. It is all free and it is better on a weekday evening than at the weekend, when the pavements are shoulder to shoulder.
Norway has sent London a tree every year since 1947. The lighting is on Thursday 3 December 2026 from about 17:00, and there are free carol concerts by local choirs most evenings until Christmas Eve. Nearby, St Martin-in-the-Fields runs candlelit carol services (some free, some ticketed) all month.
The British Museum, National Gallery, V&A, Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Tate Modern are free all year. In December several run free late openings with music and mulled wine (the V&A's Friday lates and the Natural History Museum's ice-rink-side evenings are the ones to look for), and the National Gallery is a warm, free hour between the lights and the train home.
Use a contactless card on the Tube and buses: the Zone 1 to 2 daily cap is £8.90, so a whole day of lights and museums costs less than a single peak-hour app taxi. The one day you cannot rely on it is Christmas Day, when nothing runs; if you are flying that day or the morning after, a pre-booked fixed-price car is the only sensible plan and there is no holiday surcharge with us. The West End lights (Oxford, Regent, Carnaby, Bond Street, Covent Garden), the Trafalgar Square tree and nightly carols, the Southbank Centre Winter Market (free entry), off-peak entry to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, the free national museums and their late openings, and the view from Primrose Hill or the Sky Garden (free, pre-booked).
Entry is free at off-peak times if you book a slot in advance; peak slots cost up to about £7.50. Rides, the ice rink, shows and food are all extra, so it is only free if you go to look.
