Union Chapel: the most civilised gig in London
A working Victorian church that puts on concerts, seated, in pews, often acoustic and frequently finished before half past ten. It is the opposite of every other venue on this site, and the one thing it shares with them is that there is nowhere to leave a car.
Seats, in pews, in a working church. The smallest venue we cover, with the earliest finish and by some margin the calmest exit. If you have only ever done arenas, this will be a surprise.
What makes this venue unlike everything else we cover
Four things, and all of them work in your favour once you know them.
In pews, and they are hard
Nine hundred people seated. No standing, no crush, and a slightly numb experience by the second half.
Often finished by 22:30
Concerts here start and end punctually. The return can be set to the minute rather than as a window.
Genuinely
Audiences are attentive and the room is famously good. It is the least rowdy night out we run.
And no parking whatsoever
Compton Terrace is residential with permit bays. There is nothing available at any hour of any evening.

Practical notes for a quiet evening
The early finish is the main advantage
Most of this site is about getting people home after midnight. Union Chapel is the opposite: concerts end around ten and you are travelling while the roads still move. That makes the return quicker and cheaper than almost anything else in central London, and it means a weeknight concert here is entirely workable before work the next day.
Compton Terrace has no parking at all
It is a residential terrace with permit bays and firm enforcement, opposite Highbury and Islington station. There is no meter, no space and no clever spot. Set-down happens on the approach and collection sits just off it, which is a short walk on a well-lit street.
The audience is different, and so is the requirement
Seated acoustic concerts draw an older crowd and a lot of couples, and a good share of our bookings here are two people rather than a group. A saloon or an MPV covers most of them, and the fare is modest given the short evening.
Pews are pews
This is not a transport point but it is the thing every first-timer says afterwards. The building is beautiful and the seating is Victorian church furniture. A cushion is not an unreasonable thing to bring.

Is there parking near Union Chapel?
None that is usable. Compton Terrace is a residential terrace with permit bays and firm enforcement, and there are no meters worth trying. This is the main reason people book a car for a venue this small.
What time do concerts finish?
Usually between ten and half past. Union Chapel runs punctually, which means we can set a precise collection rather than an approximate window.
Where do you drop off and collect?
Set-down on the approach to Compton Terrace, which puts you a very short walk from the door, and collection just off it on a well-lit street. It is one of the simpler arrangements we have anywhere.
How long does it take from Kent?
Around an hour to an hour and a half on the way in depending on where you start, and noticeably quicker coming back because you are travelling before eleven.
Is a car worth it for such a small venue?
For two people from Kent, generally yes, because the alternative is a train plus a change plus a walk, in both directions, in the evening. The early finish keeps the fare down.
Do you cover the Christmas carol concerts?
Yes, and they are worth booking early. December is Islington's worst month for traffic and we build a larger margin into the departure.
