52 Upper Street · Islington · London N1 0QH
Business Design Centre transfers, on the busiest high street in N1
The BDC is the most convenient exhibition venue in London to reach and one of the least convenient to be dropped at. It fronts directly onto Upper Street, a few minutes from Angel, with a bus lane outside and a great deal of everything else.
From the kerb to the doors, which is the venue's great advantage. The trade-off is that the kerb in question is on a busy Islington high street where waiting is not an option and the timing of the drop matters.
Everything follows from the venue being on Upper Street
This is a small, central, well-connected venue, and every practical consideration comes from its position rather than its size.
Directly outside
Set-down on Upper Street puts you a minute from the entrance, which is better than any other exhibition venue in London. It is a stop rather than a wait.
Timed restrictions
Upper Street carries bus lanes with operating hours. Our drivers know when they apply, which determines exactly where the vehicle can pull in.
Round the corner
We hold on a quieter side street rather than on Upper Street itself. Two minutes' walk, and the vehicle can actually leave when you get in.
Angel and Islington
Restaurants, bars and hotels all within a few minutes, which makes this the easiest venue on our list to build an evening around.
What the BDC does
It is a mid-sized venue running a busy calendar of trade shows, conferences and awards rather than the enormous consumer exhibitions of ExCeL and Olympia.
| Event type | Pattern | Travel note |
|---|---|---|
| Trade exhibitions | One to three days, weekday | Early set-up access and a working-hours finish. |
| Conferences and summits | Single day, full programme | Delegates arriving together and leaving together. Block bookings suit these. |
| Awards ceremonies and dinners | Evening, often black tie | Late finish, formal dress, and a strong case for a car rather than the Northern line. |
| Recruitment and careers fairs | Daytime | Heavy footfall in short bursts, so the arrival window matters. |
| Product launches and private hire | Varies | Corporate work, usually with multiple pick-ups and an account. |
| Design and craft fairs | Weekend | Visitors buying and carrying. Size the return vehicle accordingly. |
Islington from Kent
N1 is north of the river but not far north, which makes it one of the more manageable central runs from our patch. The tunnels and the A1 do most of the work.

The small venue that works hardest
Compact means the timing is tighter
At a huge venue, arriving ten minutes late costs you ten minutes. At the BDC, where sessions are often single-track and the programme runs to time, it can cost you the opening keynote. The venue's convenience cuts both ways: because it is easy to reach, people leave later, and Islington's morning traffic then does its work. We build the buffer in rather than assuming the short distance will save you.
Evenings here are genuinely easy
Awards dinners and evening receptions at the BDC are among the more pleasant jobs we run, because Angel is full of places to go afterwards and the collection point is two minutes away. If your evening is likely to continue somewhere else, tell us at the booking stage and we will price the whole thing as one job rather than leaving you to arrange a second car at eleven.
Set-up and breakdown on a high street
Loading at a venue that opens onto Upper Street is a managed process with specific windows, and it is not something to improvise. If you are exhibiting, tell us your access time and we will plan the run around it rather than around the show's public opening hours, which are usually several hours later.
A good venue for account bookings
Because the BDC hosts a lot of single-day conferences, the typical booking is a small group from one company travelling together for one day. That suits an account arrangement well: book by email, travel, get invoiced monthly with a VAT receipt, and nobody expenses a taxi fare individually.
Business Design Centre travel questions
Short journey, tight kerb.
Can you drop us at the entrance?
Yes, directly on Upper Street outside the venue, which puts you about a minute from the doors. It is a set-down rather than a wait, because of the bus lane and the traffic on that stretch.
Where do you collect afterwards?
From a quieter side street a couple of minutes away, because there is nowhere to hold a vehicle on Upper Street itself. We send the exact point and the registration before your finish time.
How long does it take from Kent?
Around an hour to an hour and a half depending on where you start and the time of day. Islington is one of the more manageable central London runs from our patch.
Do you cover evening awards and dinners?
Yes, and they are a good fit here. Formal dress, a late finish and a venue two minutes from the vehicle is a considerably better proposition than the Northern line at half eleven.
Can we go on somewhere afterwards?
Yes, and Angel makes it easy. Tell us at the booking stage and we will price the whole evening as one job, which costs less than arranging a second car later.
Do you handle set-up and breakdown access?
Yes. Loading windows at this venue are managed and usually fall well outside public opening hours. Give us your access time rather than the show times and we will plan around the right one.
Can you invoice our company?
Yes, on account with monthly billing and a VAT receipt. The person booking does not need to be travelling, which suits an assistant arranging a team's day.
Do the congestion charge or emissions zone apply?
We check which apply to your route on your travel date and confirm whether they are inside your quote before you book. Nothing is added afterwards.
Can you collect a group from several addresses?
Yes. Multiple pick-ups across Kent on one job are standard for conference travel and save everybody converging on one office first.
Is the fare fixed?
Yes, agreed at booking on postcode, vehicle and timings. Traffic on Upper Street or a session that overruns do not change what you pay.
