Rochester Sweeps: free festival, closed high street
The Sweeps is one of the best things Kent does and it costs nothing to attend. What it does cost you is any hope of parking, because the whole historic centre closes to traffic and tens of thousands of people arrive over a bank holiday weekend.
To attend, which is why it draws people from across the county and beyond. The town centre closes, the car parks fill by mid-morning, and the streets that remain open are not where you want to leave a vehicle all day.
Why a free festival still needs a plan
Rochester in early May is not a place to arrive in a car and hope.
The whole centre
The High Street and the surrounding roads close for the procession and the stalls. There is no driving through and no stopping.
By mid-morning
Medway's town centre parking fills early over the bank holiday and the overflow is a walk away from where you want to be.
Free means busy
Because there is no ticket, the crowd comes from all over Kent and the roads into Rochester reflect that.

Get dropped at the edge of the closure
We set you down as close to the closed area as traffic management on the day allows, which is a short walk to the High Street rather than a long one from an overflow car park. Over a bank holiday weekend with pushchairs and older relatives, that difference is the whole reason people book.
The pubs are part of it
Rochester's High Street is largely pubs, and the Sweeps weekend is when they are at their best. That is the honest reason most adult groups book transport for an event ten minutes from their house.
It is cheap because it is local
A run in from Chatham or Strood is a few minutes and costs accordingly. Split between a family or a group of friends it is a small amount for removing the entire parking problem from a bank holiday weekend.

May bank holiday weekends are busy for us across the board, and a free festival drawing crowds from across the county adds to it. A few days' notice makes the difference between a choice of vehicle and whatever is left.

Can we park in Rochester for the Sweeps?
Not easily. The town centre closes to traffic for the festival and the surrounding car parks fill by mid-morning over the bank holiday. Whatever is left is a walk from where you want to be.
How close can you drop us?
To the edge of the closed area, which is a short walk to the High Street. That is considerably closer than any parking you would find, and it is the main reason families book.
How far is it from around Kent?
Short from everywhere in Medway and mid Kent. Under ten minutes from Chatham or Strood, half an hour from Maidstone or Gravesend, under an hour from Canterbury.
Is it worth booking for such a short trip?
For a family, yes, because it removes the parking problem entirely. For a group of adults, yes, because Rochester's pubs are a large part of the weekend.
Can you collect from several addresses?
Yes, and over these distances it costs very little. Several households in one vehicle arriving together is a common Sweeps booking.
