Rochester Dickens: two festivals, two seasons
Rochester runs a Dickens Festival in the summer and a Dickensian Christmas in December, both filling a closed high street with people in Victorian costume. They are the same street and completely different days, and the December one is considerably colder.
Rochester is on our doorstep, which makes these among the shortest journeys on the whole site. It also means we know the closures, the parking situation and where a vehicle can actually stop when the High Street is shut.

We are as local as it gets for this one
Rochester is our own patch, which means we know which roads close, when they close and where a vehicle can legitimately stop once the High Street is shut. For a festival with no ticket and no venue, that local knowledge is most of what you are actually booking.
Dress under the costume in December
Victorian dress is made for looking right rather than for standing on a Kent high street in December, and the people who enjoy the Christmas festival are the ones wearing something sensible underneath. Thermals, proper socks and something that will not show. It is the single most useful piece of advice on this page.
Costumes need vehicle space
Bonnets, top hats, crinolines and coats do not compress, in the same way that Goodwood Revival outfits and Mighty Hoopla costumes do not. A group of six in full Victorian dress is a bigger vehicle than a group of six in coats. Tell us and we will size for it.
Say which festival
Rochester runs three across the year, and Sweeps in May is covered on its own page. The summer Dickens Festival and the December Dickensian Christmas are the two on this one, and they need different timings, different clothing and a different collection plan.

How many Dickens festivals are there?
Two, a Dickens Festival in summer and a Dickensian Christmas in December, both on Rochester High Street. The Sweeps Festival in May is separate and has its own page.
What is the difference between them?
Season, mostly. Same street and same costumes, with the December one considerably colder, largely after dark, and alongside a Christmas market.
What should we wear in December?
Something sensible under the costume. Victorian dress looks right and does very little for the wind on a Kent high street in December.
Do costumes affect the vehicle?
Yes. Bonnets, top hats, crinolines and coats do not compress, so six people in full dress need more room than six in coats. Tell us at booking.
How far is Rochester from the rest of Kent?
Very close. Minutes from Chatham, twenty from Gravesend or Maidstone, under an hour from almost anywhere in the county.
Where can you drop us?
At a point we know works once the High Street is closed. This is our own patch, so we know the closures and where a vehicle can legitimately stop.
Is there parking?
Rochester fills for all three festivals and the High Street is closed. Being dropped avoids the whole exercise.
Is the fare fixed?
Yes, agreed at booking, and these are among the cheapest journeys we run.
