Oxford Street goes traffic-free from late October 2026

Oxford Street pedestrianisation: where your taxi picks up and drops off

Oxford Street is being pedestrianised. From mid-to-late October 2026 the 0.9 km (0.6 mile) stretch between Orchard Street, by Selfridges, and Great Portland Street, just past Oxford Circus, closes to all traffic: private cars, buses, black cabs and private hire vehicles alike. Preparatory works started on 2 September 2026 under the Mayor of London’s new Oxford Street Development Corporation, the traffic-free layout runs as a live test through spring 2027, and a permanent redesign follows. Only emergency vehicles keep access at all times, with servicing allowed between midnight and 7am.

What changes for a Rushxo booking in Marylebone: nothing on price, because the fixed fare you agree at booking is unchanged, but the kerb moves. Your driver meets you at the nearest point a car can legally reach: Orchard Street or Portman Street for Selfridges and the western end; Duke Street, Davies Street, Stratford Place, Vere Street, New Bond Street, Holles Street and Harewood Place, the cross-streets that stay open to traffic along the middle; Cavendish Square, Henrietta Place and Wigmore Street behind John Lewis and the Oxford Circus stores; and Great Portland Street at the eastern edge. The Marble Arch to Orchard Street and Great Portland Street to Tottenham Court Road ends of Oxford Street stay open to traffic in this first phase, so door-to-door pick-ups continue there. TfL says taxi ranks and drop-off points will sit as close as possible to the edge of the zone and Blue Badge parking is kept; bus routes 7, 94, 98, 139 and 390 and night routes N7, N98, N113, N137 and N207 are diverted via Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place.

Booking tip: give the side street as your pick-up address, for example “Stratford Place, W1C” or “Great Portland Street, W1W”, so the quote, the driver’s satnav and the meeting point all agree. Same-price returns, V Class for shopping trips with bags, meet and greet at the airport and 24/7 pick-ups after late-night trading, all at a fixed fare with no surge.

Oxford Street pedestrianisation: two quick answers

Is Oxford Street pedestrianised, and can a taxi still drop me on Oxford Street?
Yes, Oxford Street is being pedestrianised. From mid-to-late October 2026 the section between Orchard Street (Selfridges) and Great Portland Street, including Oxford Circus, is closed to all traffic, black cabs and private hire included, during a live-testing phase that runs into 2027. A Rushxo driver drops you and picks you up on the nearest open street instead: Orchard Street, Portman Street, Duke Street, Davies Street, Stratford Place, Vere Street, New Bond Street, Holles Street, Harewood Place, Cavendish Square, Henrietta Place, Wigmore Street or Great Portland Street. The fixed fare does not change.
Where should my taxi pick me up on Oxford Street after the pedestrianisation?
Use the nearest side street as the address when you book. Selfridges and the western end: Orchard Street, Portman Street or Duke Street. Bond Street and the middle of Oxford Street: Stratford Place, Vere Street or New Bond Street. John Lewis and Oxford Circus: Cavendish Square, Holles Street, Henrietta Place or Great Portland Street. The ends of Oxford Street towards Marble Arch and Tottenham Court Road stay open to traffic in this first phase, so door-to-door pick-ups continue there.

Tipping: 10–12.5%% service is often added in restaurants, never in pubs or chippies. Most places take cards; a few old caffs and Sam Smith’s pubs are cash-only. Vegan and gluten-free options are marked on almost every London menu – just ask. The airport shops sell the same tea tins and biscuits at 2–3 times the supermarket price, so buy souvenirs in town.

How to choose. Public transport wins on price for one traveller with hand luggage at 10am. A taxi usually wins when there are two or more of you (one fare for the car, not per person), when you have hold bags or a pushchair, for flights before the first train arrives or landings after the last one leaves, and when a change of train or a station without lifts would be a problem. Rail fares above are per adult; add £4–£6 per person for the DART/shuttle where shown, and remember engineering work most weekends.
