Boomtown: the journey is short, the queue is not
Matterley Estate is under two hours from most of Kent, which makes Boomtown one of the more accessible camping festivals we serve. Then you arrive, and join a queue that has become part of the festival's folklore. Planning the arrival matters far more here than planning the drive.
From north Kent to the Matterley Estate, via the M25 and M3. Around two hours on a clear run, which is the easy part. The approach off the A31 on arrival day is where the real time goes.

The queue to get onto site is famous, and it is best treated as a known quantity rather than a surprise.
Ahead of the main wave
Leaving Kent before dawn puts you at the front of the arrival window. It is a hard morning and it consistently pays off.
The worst window
Everyone else's idea of an early start. This is when the approach roads back up and the wait is longest.
Roads clear, pitches do not
Arriving late afternoon means a shorter queue and a longer walk from wherever camping still has room.
Longer than expected
Whatever you carry, you carry it a considerable distance from where vehicles stop. Pack accordingly and bring a trolley.
Kent to Winchester
The route is the M25 clockwise then the M3, joining the A31 for the final approach. Straightforward until the last few miles on arrival day.

Sizing for a five-day build
Boomtown runs several days with camping throughout, so the load is similar to Glastonbury with the added factor that a lot of people bring costume and props.

Making the arrival work
The early start is the whole strategy
Leaving Kent before dawn is unpleasant and it is the single best thing you can do for a Boomtown weekend. Groups that leave at four are pitching by mid-morning; groups that leave at eight are still in a queue at lunchtime. Same journey, entirely different day.
Costume, props and everything else
Boomtown draws a crowd that dresses for it, and outfits take up more room than clothes. Add that to the camping kit and this is a festival where under-sizing the vehicle is easy to do. Tell us if the group is bringing anything unusual and we will allow for it.
The walk from the vehicle
Wherever we are permitted to set down, there is a walk to camping and it is a real one. A trolley is worth the space it occupies, and packing so that each person can carry their own load in one trip saves a great deal of shuttling.
Monday, and the same principle in reverse
The site empties onto a limited road network and the queue reappears. We set collections for later in the day and hold position at an agreed point off site until your group is together.

How far is Boomtown from Kent?
Around ninety-five miles from north Kent, about two hours on a clear run via the M25 and M3. The distance is not the issue; the arrival queue is.
What time should we leave?
Before dawn on arrival day if you can face it. Groups leaving at four in the morning are pitched by mid-morning, and groups leaving at eight are still queuing at lunchtime for the same journey.
How long is the queue to get in?
It varies year to year and it is a known feature of this festival rather than an occasional problem. Treat it as a planned part of the day rather than a surprise, and leave accordingly.
Can you carry camping kit and costumes?
Yes, and mention the costumes. Boomtown draws a crowd that dresses for it and outfits take real space on top of the camping equipment.
How far is the walk from the drop-off?
A genuine distance, wherever we are permitted to set down. A trolley is worth the space, and packing so everyone can manage one trip saves a lot of shuttling back and forth.
When do you collect on the Monday?
Later in the day. The site empties onto a limited road network and an early departure usually means sitting in it.
What size vehicle do we need?
Go up from what the head count suggests. Ten people with five days of kit is a comfortable minibus; sixteen with the same is a midi coach.
Is the fare fixed?
Yes, agreed at booking. A long queue on the way in or a slow exit on the Monday does not change what you pay.
