Henley: the dress code with no phones
Henley Royal Regatta has the strictest rules of any British sporting event, and the one that catches people out is not the jacket or the hemline. Mobile phones may not be used in the Stewards' Enclosure. If you have arranged to ring your driver when you are ready, you have arranged something that will not work.
In the Stewards' Enclosure, where using a mobile is not permitted. It is a genuine rule, genuinely enforced, and it means the collection arrangement for Henley has to be agreed in advance rather than sorted out on the day.

A day at Henley
The phone rule changes the booking, not the day
Nobody minds it once they know about it, and it is part of why the Stewards' feels the way it does. What it means for us is that the usual arrangement, where a group rings when they are ready, simply cannot be used. We agree a firm time and a firm point in advance, with a fallback, and one nominated person who can step out of the enclosure if something changes.
Read the published requirements, do not guess
Henley publishes what is required in each enclosure and applies it. Jackets and ties for men in the Stewards', hemlines below the knee for women, and rules that differ between enclosures and badges. Being turned away at the entrance after a two-hour drive is a bad afternoon, and it is entirely avoidable by reading the Regatta's own guidance for the badge you actually hold.
Henley the town is the bottleneck
A small Thames town with one bridge and a great many people arriving at once, on roads that were not built for it. We plan an early arrival and we collect away from the centre rather than trying to reach the riverside, which is a short walk and saves a considerable amount of sitting still.
It is a full day, and a long one
Racing runs from morning to early evening across five days, and the social element runs longer still. Nobody should be planning to drive home from Henley, and given the enclosure rules about phones, nobody should be planning to work out the journey home while they are inside one.
