Short answer: the studio tour is 20 miles from central London and the official shuttle only runs from Watford Junction, so most families end up on two trains and a bus. A fixed-fare car is £75 one way for the whole car from central London, drops you at the entrance, and comes back when you are done.

Leavesden is on the way to nothing, which is why the return is usually to the hotel. Two exceptions: Heathrow is 30 minutes south, so a last-day visit can end at the airport with luggage in the boot; and Oxford is 50 minutes further north-west for Potter filming locations (Christ Church, the Bodleian) on a long day. Yes. The tour takes three to four hours; book two one-way journeys with the return two hours after your entry slot plus the time you want in the shop, or ask for waiting time by the hour.
For anyone who has read the books, yes: it is the real sets, not a theme park. Book tickets months ahead for school holidays and weekends; midweek term-time slots at 09:30 are the quietest.
