Chester: the oldest and smallest course in the world
Racing has been held on the Roodee at Chester since 1539, which makes it the oldest racecourse still in use anywhere. It is also the smallest circuit in British racing, tucked inside the Roman city walls, and it is so tight that you can watch an entire race from wherever you happen to be standing.
Continuous racing on the same ground for nearly five hundred years, inside the walls of a Roman city. Nowhere else in the world can claim it, and the setting is unlike any other racecourse you will visit.
What the size actually means
Chester's circuit is barely a mile round, and it changes both the racing and the day.
From anywhere
No big screens needed. The entire circuit is visible from most of the enclosures.
And a draw bias
Low draws are famously favoured. Racing here is its own discipline.

A trip to Chester
Stay over, as with York
Two hundred and forty-five miles each way makes a day return a fifteen-hour exercise for an afternoon of racing, at a course that sits inside one of the most attractive small cities in England. A night in Chester turns that into a proper trip, and the city genuinely rewards an evening. It is the same argument as York and it applies just as strongly.
The May Festival books out
Chester's showpiece meeting fills a small course to capacity and the city with it. Accommodation goes early and so do vehicles, particularly for the Friday and Saturday. If the May Festival is your target, arrange it months rather than weeks ahead and we will hold the dates.
The racing is genuinely unusual
A circuit barely a mile round with tight turns produces racing that behaves differently from anywhere else, and a well-known bias towards low draws that regulars take very seriously. Whether or not you follow form, watching an entire race unfold in front of you without a big screen is a different experience from a wide galloping track.
Combine it with Oulton Park
Twenty minutes away, and a good many groups who make the journey from Kent build a weekend around both. Racing on the Saturday and a circuit meeting on the Sunday, with one vehicle and one arrangement, prices considerably better than two separate trips north.
