What is an AOG situation?

AOG stands for "aircraft on ground". It is the industry term for an aircraft that cannot fly until a fault is rectified — most often because a specific part is unserviceable and a replacement is not on site.

An AOG is not a scheduling inconvenience. It is a hard stop. The aircraft cannot depart, cannot carry passengers or freight, and cannot continue its rotation until the part is fitted and the aircraft is signed back into service. Everything downstream is frozen with it.

How AOG events typically arise
Unscheduled defectA fault found during a walk-round, on a pre-flight check, or reported by the crew in the technical log
Component failureA line-replaceable unit fails and no serviceable spare is held at that station
DamageBird strike, ground handling contact, tyre damage, lightning strike or foreign object damage
Maintenance overrunA scheduled check uncovers additional work needing parts that are not in stores
Wrong or unserviceable partThe part supplied does not fit, or arrives with incorrect paperwork or certification
DiversionAn aircraft goes technical away from its home base, with no local spares support

The common factor is that the part is nearly always somewhere else — in a supplier's stores, at a distribution centre, at another airfield, in a cargo terminal awaiting release, or with an MRO two hundred miles away. Closing that gap quickly is the entire job of an AOG courier.

How AOG Parts Delivery Works

Step by step, from the first call to the part reaching the engineer.

The operational reasons networks struggle with aviation work.

AOG vs Standard Courier Services

A practical comparison, including when a standard service is the right choice.

Why every minute of downtime is expensive

People outside aviation are often surprised that operators will pay for a dedicated vehicle to move a single small box. The reason is simple: the transport cost is trivial next to the cost of the aircraft not moving.

What downtime affectsWhy it costs
The aircraft itselfA grounded aircraft still carries its lease, financing, insurance and parking costs while earning nothing
The rotationOne missed sector cascades. The aircraft is out of position for its next flight, and the one after that
CrewCrews sit on duty against fixed hours limits. Run out of hours and the flight cannot operate even once the aircraft is fixed
SlotsDeparture slots are time-bound. Miss one and the next may be hours away
PassengersDelay and cancellation obligations, rebooking, welfare costs and compensation
CargoTime-sensitive freight misses connections and onward commitments
EngineeringTechnicians and hangar slots are held, unable to progress or release the aircraft
ReputationOn-time performance is measured, published and contractually significant

This is why AOG buyers do not shop on price alone. The question is never "what is the cheapest way to move this part" — it is "what is the fastest way to get this aircraft back in the air, with certainty." A dedicated vehicle that leaves immediately and arrives predictably is worth many times its cost when weighed against a cascade of delayed rotations.

Why choose RushXO

Dedicated vehicle onlyYour part travels alone. We do not consolidate it with other freight
No multi-drop routesThere are no other collections or deliveries on the run. Yours is the only job on board
Direct point to pointStraight from collection to the aircraft or facility. No depot, no sortation, no transfer
24/7 operationsNights, weekends, bank holidays. AOG events do not keep office hours
Instant dispatch by phoneOne call to a person who can commit a vehicle — not a web form and a wait
Driver contact sharedYou get the driver's details so you can speak to them directly, not relay through a call centre
Journey updatesYou are given the driver's contact details and can speak to them directly at any point during the job
Aviation environments — we work regularly with airports, cargo terminals, engineering facilities and maintenance bases, and understand how these sites operate
UK-wide coverageCollections and deliveries across the United Kingdom
Fixed price, quoted up frontYou know the cost before the vehicle moves. The quoted price includes waiting time, tolls and congestion or clean air charges — there is no meter running and no surcharges afterwards
Invoice accountsAvailable for business customers — speak to dispatch about setting one up

We are not a parcel company

This distinction matters more than any other on this page, so it is worth being blunt about it.

RushXO dedicated AOGStandard parcel network
Your partAlone in the vehicleConsolidated with thousands of others
RoutingDirect, non-stopCollection round → depot → trunk → depot → delivery round
Other dropsNoneMulti-drop rounds
HandlingLoaded once, unloaded onceHandled and sorted repeatedly
DepartureAs soon as the job is confirmedAgainst fixed cut-off times
Out of hours24/7Generally closed

If plans changeVehicle can be redirected in transitVery difficult once in the network

An honest note: parcel networks are excellent at what they are built for. If your part is routine, replaceable and not urgent, a network will move it more cheaply and you should use one. Dedicated transport earns its cost when a delay is expensive — which, in an AOG, it always is.

Emergency response process

StageWhat happens
1 · You callSpeak to dispatch on 020 8888 9988 or message WhatsApp. A person answers, day or night
2 · We take the detailsCollection point, delivery point, part dimensions and weight, deadline, site access and contact names at both ends
3 · Price and timing confirmedYou get a fixed price and a realistic arrival time before anything moves
4 · Vehicle dispatchedThe nearest suitable vehicle and driver are assigned to your job alone
5 · Driver details sharedYou receive the driver's contact so you can reach them directly
6 · Collection & POCThe driver checks the paperwork, loads and secures the part, and proof of collection is recorded
7 · Direct transitNon-stop to the destination, with journey updates throughout
8 · Delivery & PODHanded to your nominated contact, with proof of delivery captured and confirmed back to you

What to have ready when you call. It sounds obvious, but the jobs that move fastest are the ones where the first call contains: exact collection address and contact, exact delivery address and contact, part dimensions and weight, whether the item is classified as dangerous goods, any handling restrictions, and the time the part must be on site. If clearance or release paperwork is still outstanding at the collection point, tell us — it changes when the vehicle should leave.

How it works

1. Call or messagePhone 020 8888 9988 or WhatsApp +44 7466 237870
2. Get a fixed priceQuoted for the specific movement, before dispatch
3. Vehicle assignedDedicated to your consignment, dispatched on confirmation
4. CollectedProof of collection recorded at the point of pickup
5. Driven directNon-stop, no other jobs, live updates
6. DeliveredProof of delivery captured and confirmed to you

Typical AOG scenarios

ScenarioThe movement
Part released at a cargo terminalImport spare clears at a cargo centre; collected and driven straight to the aircraft
Supplier stock, aircraft elsewherePart sits in a supplier's warehouse hundreds of miles from the grounded aircraft
Aircraft technical away from baseAircraft goes tech at a regional airfield with no local spares; part sent from main base
Tyre or brake changeWheel and brake assemblies moved urgently to the stand or hangar
Avionics swapAn LRU is required from another station or from an MRO
Wrong part suppliedDelivered component does not fit or lacks correct certification; replacement collected immediately
Unserviceable unit returnedRemoved component driven directly to an MRO for overhaul or exchange
Tooling shortfallSpecialist tooling or ground equipment needed before the task can even begin
Business aviation departureAn FBO needs a part before a scheduled private departure
Overnight maintenanceNight check uncovers extra work; parts moved before the morning departure

Where we collect from

Parts suppliers & distributorsAviation parts stockists, OEM suppliers and exchange pools
Warehouses & distribution centresCentral stores and spares holdings
Cargo terminalsAirport cargo centres and handling agents, once freight is released
Engineering facilitiesComponent workshops, avionics and overhaul shops
Maintenance bases & MROsLine and base maintenance facilities, hangars
Other airfieldsAirport-to-airport road movements
ManufacturersProduction sites and factory stores

On cargo terminal collections: most delays there are documentary rather than physical. Freight cannot be handed over until the air waybill, customs clearance and the handling agent's release are all in place. We would rather confirm that before dispatching than send a vehicle to sit in a queue — it saves you both time and waiting charges. If clearance is pending, tell dispatch and we will time the run around it.

Areas we cover

UK-wide, door to door. Airports and airfields we regularly deliver to and collect from include:

AirportTypical AOG work
HeathrowCargo terminal collections, deliveries to maintenance and engineering, onward UK distribution
LutonBusiness aviation and MRO support, parts to line maintenance
StanstedCargo and maintenance operations, spares to hangars
London CityTime-critical parts against tight turnarounds
FarnboroughBusiness aviation, FBO and operator support
Biggin HillBusiness aviation and maintenance facilities
OxfordEngineering, training fleets and general aviation
CambridgeMaintenance, completions and engineering work
UK-wideRegional airports, airfields, MROs, suppliers and engineering sites nationwide

Being straight about access: we deliver to the airport, hangar, FBO, cargo terminal or engineering facility and hand the consignment to your nominated contact. Where a movement requires access beyond a security boundary, that is arranged through your operator or handling agent — tell dispatch at the point of booking so the handover is planned properly rather than improvised at a gate.

Frequently transported items

Aircraft spare partsRotables, line-replaceable units, structural and cabin components
AvionicsFlight deck and navigation units, control boxes, sensitive electronic assemblies
Tyres & wheelsMain and nose gear wheel assemblies
BrakesBrake units and associated components

Technical documentationRelease certificates, technical records and paperwork accompanying parts

Dangerous goods: aviation consignments often include classified items — lithium batteries, oxygen generators, aerosols, flammable adhesives and compressed gases among them. Declare these when you call. We confirm the arrangements for carriage case by case before the vehicle is dispatched, so nothing is loaded that should not be.

Our dedicated vehicle network

Vehicles are matched to the part — its dimensions, weight and how it needs to be loaded — not to whatever happens to be free.

VehicleTypically suited to
Car / small vanDocuments, avionics units, small boxed components
Medium vanPalletised spares, wheels and brakes, multiple boxes
Long wheelbase vanLonger components and larger assemblies
Luton / tail-liftHeavy or awkward items requiring mechanical loading

Whichever vehicle is assigned, the principle does not change: it carries your consignment and nothing else. Tell dispatch the dimensions, weight and whether the item needs a tail-lift or particular orientation, and the right vehicle is sent first time.

Real-time updates, proof of collection & proof of delivery

On an AOG job the operations desk usually needs to answer one question repeatedly: where is the part now? The service is built so you never have to guess.

Direct communicationYou speak to dispatch, and you are given the driver's contact details so you can reach them directly
Journey updatesProgress updates from dispatch at collection and delivery, plus the driver's direct number so you can check in at any point
Proof of collectionRecorded when the part is picked up, confirming what was collected, from whom and at what time
Proof of deliveryCaptured digitally at handover, recording who received the consignment and when, and confirmed back to you
ExceptionsIf anything changes — a delayed release, a site access problem, traffic — you are told as it happens, not afterwards

How to reach usPhone 020 8888 9988 · WhatsApp +44 7466 237870

Most AOG calls arrive outside normal working hours — a defect found on a night check, a diversion at 2 AM, a part released after a late clearance. That is precisely when a network cannot help and a dedicated vehicle can.

What we do and don't claim

Aviation buyers verify what suppliers tell them, so here is a straight account.

What we doDetail
Dedicated vehicle per jobYour consignment travels alone — no consolidation, no multi-drop
Direct point-to-point transportCollection to delivery without depots or transfers
24/7 dispatch by phoneA person answers and can commit a vehicle at any hour
Driver contact sharedSpeak to the driver directly during the job
Proof of collection and deliveryRecorded at both ends and confirmed to you
UK-wide coverageCollections and deliveries nationwide
Aviation environmentsRegular work with airports, cargo terminals, MROs and engineering facilities
Invoice accountsAvailable for business customers — speak to dispatch about setting one up
What we don't claim. We would rather tell you now than at a security gate. RushXO does not advertise airside access, formal aviation security accreditation, temperature-controlled or GDP-certified transport, or a guaranteed nationwide response time. If your movement requires any of those, say so when you call and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit — and if we are not, we will say so.

We also don't publish a headline "vehicle with you within X minutes" figure. Response time depends on where the part is and what time it is. You will get a realistic arrival time on the first call, which is worth considerably more on an AOG than an optimistic one.

Need a part moved now? Call dispatch with the collection point, delivery point, dimensions, weight and deadline, and you will have a fixed price and a vehicle assigned.

Frequently asked questions

What does AOG mean?

AOG stands for "aircraft on ground" — an aircraft that cannot fly until a fault is rectified, usually because a replacement part is not available on site. It is a hard stop: the aircraft cannot operate, and its onward rotation, crew and slots are all affected until the part is fitted and the aircraft is released to service.

How quickly can you collect?

A vehicle is assigned as soon as the job is confirmed. Actual timing depends on where the part is and the time of day, so rather than publishing a blanket figure we give you a realistic arrival time on the first call. Phone 020 8888 9988 and dispatch will tell you straight away.

Do you operate at night and at weekends?

Yes — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including public holidays. Most AOG events happen outside office hours, which is exactly when parcel networks cannot help.

Will my part travel with other consignments?

No. Every job is a dedicated vehicle carrying your consignment alone. There is no consolidation, no depot handling and no multi-drop route — the vehicle goes directly from collection to delivery.

Which airports do you deliver to?

Heathrow, Luton, Stansted, London City, Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Oxford and Cambridge regularly, plus airports, airfields, MROs and engineering facilities UK-wide. We deliver to the facility and hand over to your nominated contact.

Do you have airside access?

We do not advertise airside access. We deliver to the airport, hangar, FBO or cargo terminal and hand the consignment to your nominated contact. If a movement needs to go beyond a security boundary, that is arranged through your operator or handling agent — tell us at booking so the handover is planned in advance.

Can you carry dangerous goods?

Aviation parts frequently include classified items such as lithium batteries, oxygen generators and aerosols. Declare them when you call and we will confirm the arrangements for carriage case by case before dispatching a vehicle.

What do you need from me to start a job?

Collection address and contact, delivery address and contact, part dimensions and weight, the deadline, whether the item is dangerous goods, and any site access or handling requirements. If release or clearance paperwork is still outstanding at the collection point, tell us — it affects when the vehicle should set off.

How do I know where my part is?

You are given the driver's contact details so you can speak to them directly, and dispatch provides updates through the run. Proof of collection is recorded at pickup and proof of delivery at handover, both confirmed back to you.

How much does it cost?

Every AOG job is priced individually, because cost depends on the route, the vehicle required, the time of day and any special handling. You get a fixed price quoted before the vehicle is dispatched. Call 020 8888 9988 with the movement details for a firm figure.

Do you offer accounts for regular work?

Yes, invoice accounts are available for business customers with regular urgent movements. Speak to dispatch about your typical lanes and volumes.

Can I collect from a cargo terminal?

Yes. Bear in mind that most cargo terminal delays are documentary — freight cannot be released without the correct air waybill, customs clearance and a release note from the handling agent. Tell us if clearance is still pending and we will time the collection around it rather than have a vehicle waiting.
