For solo travellers with no luggage, public transport can make sense. But for 2+ passengers with luggage, a pre-booked taxi is often comparable or cheaper per head, and dramatically more convenient.
Key advantages of pre-booked taxi: door-to-door, no luggage restrictions, driver tracks your flight, same price at 4am as 4pm, no connection risk.
"Can I manage the Piccadilly line with two big suitcases?" is one of the most common questions from first-time visitors. It is possible, but plan for these points.
No luggage racks. Piccadilly line trains have no luggage space. From about 7:30 to 9:30am and 5 to 7pm the trains fill up with commuters, and you will be standing with your cases for most of the 50 to 60 minute journey.
Stairs at the other end. Only about a third of Tube stations are step-free from street to platform. On the Piccadilly line, King's Cross St Pancras, Green Park and Knightsbridge (step-free since April 2025) are. Covent Garden and Russell Square rely on lifts, with a long spiral staircase as the only alternative, and queues for the lifts at busy times. Check TfL's step-free Tube map for your hotel's nearest station before you fly.
A better train for luggage. Every Elizabeth line station is step-free, and its trains have more room. If your hotel is near Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon or Liverpool Street, it is the easier choice with cases.
When to skip the train. If each person has a large suitcase, you are travelling with children, or your hotel is more than a few minutes' walk from a step-free station, a fixed-price car to the door removes the stairs, crowds and changes.
A: No. There are no luggage racks, so you keep your cases with you. Travel outside rush hour if you can.
