Is Gatwick Express worth it?. We compare cost, time and convenience honestly so you can make the right choice for your journey.
| Option | Cost | Journey time | Pickup | Drop-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rushxo Taxi | £55 fixed | 50-65 min | Your door | Terminal door |
| Public transport | £35 single | 30 min | Victoria only | Terminal |
Taxi fare fixed at booking. Public transport fares as of June 2026. Times approximate.
For solo travellers with no luggage, public transport can make sense. But for 2+ passengers with luggage, a pre-booked taxi is often comparable or cheaper per head, and dramatically more convenient.
Key advantages of pre-booked taxi: door-to-door, no luggage restrictions, driver tracks your flight, same price at 4am as 4pm, no connection risk.
"Is the Gatwick Express worth the extra money?" is one of the most asked Gatwick questions. Three train companies run into London, at similar speeds but different prices.
| Gatwick Express | Southern | Thameslink | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goes to | Victoria, non-stop | Victoria, with a few stops | London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon, St Pancras |
| Journey time | About 30 minutes | About 30–35 minutes | About 30 minutes to London Bridge, longer to St Pancras |
| Typical 2026 single | About £22 pay-as-you-go | Less than the Express | About £10–£14, depending on time of day |
| Frequency | Twice an hour | Several an hour | Several an hour |
Fares are approximate 2026 figures. Check the live fare for your exact station before you travel.
Pick by where you're staying. For Victoria, Westminster or Belgravia, Southern is usually the best value and only a few minutes slower than the Express. For King's Cross, St Pancras, Farringdon, the City or London Bridge, take Thameslink, which goes straight there with no change.
Paying. Contactless and Oyster work from Gatwick, but the fare is outside TfL's daily caps. At Victoria the Express and Southern use different platforms and charge different fares, so tap in and out at the gateline for the train you actually take. A paper return can work out cheaper than two contactless singles.
When a car makes more sense: three or more people with full-size luggage, a hotel away from the stations above, or an early or late flight.
A: Rarely. Southern trains to Victoria take only a few minutes longer and cost less, and Thameslink is better for King's Cross, St Pancras, the City and London Bridge.
A: Thameslink. It runs direct from Gatwick to St Pancras International, via London Bridge, Blackfriars and Farringdon, with no change needed.
