Kent Event Centre transfers: our own county, our own roads
Detling sits on the North Downs above Maidstone, off the A249. There is no station, the bus service is not a plan, and the car park is a field. It is also twenty-five minutes from most of our patch, which makes this one of the easiest bookings we take.
This is a Kent venue served by a Kent operator. Short journeys, low dead mileage, drivers who know the A249 and the lanes off it, and pricing that reflects all three rather than a London firm's travel time.
What a rural showground means in practice
Detling runs a busy calendar of very different events across permanent halls and a large outdoor site. The venue is the same; the day is not.
Road access only
There is no rail link and the local bus service is thin. Everyone arrives by road, which is the whole reason this page exists.
Weather-dependent
Overflow parking is on grass. After sustained rain it becomes a considerably less appealing proposition, and the exit slows accordingly.
One main approach
Traffic funnels onto a single main road on busy days, and the last two miles are where the queue forms rather than the motorway.

Why the local venue still needs a local operator
There genuinely is no other way to get there
Detling is four miles from Maidstone and effectively unreachable without a vehicle. No station, minimal buses, and a walk up onto the Downs that nobody is doing with a trade stand or a toddler. That means every single attendee arrives by road, which in turn means the car park fills, the A249 backs up and the exit is slow. Being dropped and collected removes all three problems at once.
Mud is a real planning factor
Overflow parking at a showground is grass, and Kent weather being what it is, that regularly means mud. Vehicles get stuck, exits slow to a crawl and the walk from the far corner of a wet field is not a good end to a day. This is the most consistent reason people who drove one year book us the next.
Trade stands and the load question
A lot of Detling's calendar is exhibitors rather than visitors: small businesses with a stand, stock and a gazebo. Those bookings need load space more than seats, and they need early access on set-up morning. Tell us the volume rather than the head count and we will send something that fits it.
Evening functions on the Downs
The venue hosts weddings, dinners and private functions, and at eleven at night on top of the North Downs there is no passing traffic whatsoever. A pre-booked collection is not a convenience there, it is the only realistic way home short of a very long wait. We are close enough that the fare for it is modest.

Is there a train station near Detling?
No. The Kent Event Centre has no rail link and the nearest stations are in Maidstone, several miles away and up a substantial hill. Local bus provision is limited. Effectively everyone arrives by road, which is why booking the journey matters even for a venue this close to home.
How far is Detling from Maidstone?
About four miles, so ten to fifteen minutes. From Medway it is around twenty minutes, from Gravesend half an hour and from Canterbury about forty-five minutes. It is one of the shortest runs on our list.
Can you drop us at the entrance?
Yes. Set-down is at the main entrance rather than in a distant field, which on a wet day is the entire argument for booking. On the busiest events the marshals direct traffic differently and we confirm the arrangement before your date.
What about parking on the grass?
It works well in dry weather and considerably less well after rain, when the exit in particular slows down a great deal. Being collected avoids the field entirely, which is why a lot of our bookings here come from people who drove the previous year.
Can you carry trade stand equipment?
Yes, and tell us the volume rather than just the head count. Stock, gazebos, tables and display boards need load space, and set-up access is usually well before the public opening.
Do you cover evening functions and weddings?
Yes, and it is worth booking. There is no passing traffic on the Downs late at night, so a pre-arranged collection is the practical way home. Because we are local, the fare for a late run is modest.
Do you cover outdoor festivals at the showground?
Yes. For outdoor events the site is large and a meeting point described as 'the entrance' is not precise enough, so we agree a specific named spot in advance.
Can you invoice a business?
Yes, on account with monthly billing and a VAT receipt. Exhibitors doing several shows a year at Detling often find that simpler than paying separately each time.
Can you collect a group from several addresses?
Yes, and over these distances it costs very little. Multiple pick-ups across Maidstone, Medway or Sittingbourne on one job are straightforward.
Is the fare fixed?
