Heathrow: Coach vs Taxi vs Train
Landing at Heathrow Airport? Let us take the stress off
Your driver is waiting with a name board the moment you come through customs into arrivals – not in a car park, not on the phone. We track the flight, so a late landing costs you nothing, and the first 60 minutes after the plane lands are free waiting time. Luggage trolleys, a child seat, a wheelchair-friendly car: tell us when you book and it is ready.
SIM card and money on the way. Still carrying your own currency? That is fine: every car takes cards and contactless, so you need no pounds in hand for the journey. If you want a UK SIM or some cash, say so and your driver will point you to the kiosks in arrivals (SIM cards: WHSmith and the Sim Local / Simpoint kiosks in every arrivals hall; currency: Travelex and ICE desks in all terminals (airport rates are the worst in London – change £20–£50 for the first day and the rest in town)) or, usually cheaper, stop at a supermarket, Post Office or bank on the route. Our local drivers know where the fair rates and the working cash machines are – trust them to sort it in minutes.

Step-free: Accessible lifts throughout; accessible passport lanes; lifts to rail and tube platforms. Pets: Heathrow Animal Reception Centre approval at least 72h before flight; +44 20 8745 7894. Airport accessibility page Our driver meets you at the assistance desk if you prefer, carries folding wheelchairs and walkers free, and assistance dogs always travel with you at no charge.

Tipping: 10–12.5%% service is often added in restaurants, never in pubs or chippies. Most places take cards; a few old caffs and Sam Smith’s pubs are cash-only. Vegan and gluten-free options are marked on almost every London menu – just ask. The airport shops sell the same tea tins and biscuits at 2–3 times the supermarket price, so buy souvenirs in town.
Three genuinely different ways to make the same journey, each with real trade-offs. This is an honest comparison, not a sales pitch — the train is often the better choice for a solo traveller with carry-on luggage, and the coach is unbeatable on price if you're not in a hurry. Here's where RushXO actually earns its place, and where it doesn't. TfL licensed operator, Licence 11588.
RushXO fares vary by exact destination — see our Heathrow to London hub for fixed prices to your specific station or postcode. Third-party fares checked against operators' own published pricing; both coach and rail operators can adjust fares.
Option by option
What each option is actually like
RushXO — Private Taxi
Door to door, fixed price, no changes
You book in advance, your driver waits in arrivals with a name board, loads your luggage, and takes you directly to your destination — no stops, no changes, no navigating a station with bags. Fares to central London run roughly £42–£70 depending on exactly where you're headed (Paddington £42, Waterloo £65, King's Cross £70), fixed before you travel with no surge pricing.
Your flight is tracked automatically at no extra charge, so a delayed landing doesn't cost you anything — the pickup simply moves with it. This is the option that scales best for groups: split four ways, £42–£70 can beat four separate train or coach fares outright.
National Express Coach
The cheapest option, if you're not in a hurry
Coaches run frequently — around 77 times a day to Victoria Coach Station — with one-way fares from £9.50, by far the cheapest of the three. Luggage allowance is one large suitcase, one medium case, and a small hand item; anything beyond that gets awkward.
Journey time genuinely varies with stops and traffic — National Express advertises journeys as quick as 25-35 minutes to some stops, but a full run into Victoria with typical traffic on the approach roads can take considerably longer. There's no automatic flight tracking, though a £5 each-way "Change & Go" add-on lets you switch to a different coach within 12 hours if your plans shift — useful, but it's on you to manage it, not automatic the way flight tracking is.
Elizabeth Line & Heathrow Express
Fast and cost-effective for light luggage
The Elizabeth line is a flat £15.50 single into central London, reaching Bond Street, Farringdon and Liverpool Street directly in around 30 minutes — genuinely good value if you know where you're going and are travelling light. The Heathrow Express is quicker (15 minutes) but only reaches Paddington, costs £26 on the day (from £10 booked well ahead), and doesn't serve Terminal 4 directly.
Both get crowded at peak times, and neither is built for more than one suitcase — standing with luggage on a packed carriage is uncomfortable at best. See our full Heathrow Terminals Guide for more on rail options by terminal.
Real scenarios
Which one actually fits your trip?
Family, heavy luggageRushXO — luggage handled, no station navigating with kids
Solo, carry-on only, off-peakElizabeth line — £15.50, genuinely good value
Budget backpacker, no rushNational Express — from £9.50, flexible timing
Late-night landingRushXO — door to door, no navigating a station in the dark
Group of 3–4 splitting the fareRushXO — often cheaper per head than separate train tickets
Connecting from another airport?
Landing at Gatwick, Stansted or Luton?
If you're connecting onward through Heathrow from another London airport, the coach and train options above don't really apply in the same way — those routes typically involve at least one change and considerably more time. A direct taxi transfer is usually the more reliable choice when you have a connection to protect. See our Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or London City transfer pages, or the wider Heathrow Airport Transfers hub.

FAQ
Heathrow transfer options FAQ
What's the cheapest way from Heathrow to London?
National Express coach, from £9.50 one-way to Victoria Coach Station. It's the cheapest option by a clear margin, but it's the slowest, has the most limited luggage allowance, and doesn't track your flight if you're delayed.
What's the fastest way from Heathrow to London?
Heathrow Express, at 15 minutes to Paddington (21 to Terminal 5), though that only gets you to Paddington station — you'll likely need a further Tube or taxi journey to your actual destination, which eats into the time saved.
Is a taxi worth it over the train from Heathrow?
For groups, families, heavy luggage, late-night arrivals, or a delayed flight, generally yes — a fixed-price taxi goes door to door with no changes, and RushXO tracks your flight automatically at no extra charge. For a solo traveller with carry-on luggage in good weather, the train is often the more economical choice.
Does RushXO track flights like a chauffeur service?
Yes. Your flight is tracked automatically and your pickup time adjusts to your actual landing time at no extra charge — you don't need to do anything or pay for the flexibility, unlike coach add-ons that require you to manage a rebooking yourself.
Can you provide a child car seat?
Licensed taxis are legally exempt from the requirement to provide one, but we recommend using one where possible and can arrange an age-appropriate seat if you let us know when booking.
Is RushXO cheaper for a group than separate train tickets?
Often, yes — a fixed £42–£70 fare split between three or four people frequently beats the same number of individual train or coach tickets, without anyone needing to navigate a station with luggage.
