Blenheim: the house is the small part
People come to Blenheim for the palace and then discover it sits in two thousand acres of Capability Brown parkland with lakes, a formal garden, a cascade and miles of walking. The house takes ninety minutes. The rest takes as long as you give it.
Of parkland, laid out by Capability Brown in the 1760s and considered his finest work. Allowing three hours for a visit and then discovering the scale of the grounds is the most common way to leave Blenheim wishing you had stayed longer.

A day at Blenheim
Leave earlier than you think you need to
Two hours each way plus a proper visit is a nine or ten hour day, and the mistake is setting off at ten and arriving after midday. An early start turns a rushed afternoon into an unhurried day, and it costs nothing extra when the vehicle is booked for the day either way.
The park is the reason to come back
Most first visits concentrate on the house and the formal gardens, which are magnificent and are perhaps a fifth of the estate. The lake, the Grand Bridge and the cascade are a walk rather than a glance, and people who allow time for them tend to rate the day considerably higher than those who do not.

Woodstock is worth half an hour
The village sits at the palace gates and is a genuinely pleasant Cotswold town with places to eat. A stop there on the way in or out costs nothing extra when built into the day, and it is a better lunch than most estate cafes manage.
