RUSHXO Travel Guide · Updated July 2026 · 9 min read · Written by the RUSHXO airport transfer team
Here's the good news nobody needs to soften: London City is the easiest arrival in London. It's the capital's most central airport — barely 6–7 miles from the Square Mile — with a train station physically attached to the terminal and a layout so compact you can be kerbside minutes after the seatbelt sign goes off.
The only decisions left are small ones: DLR or taxi, which interchange for your destination, and one tap-in quirk that quietly overcharges unwary arrivals. This guide covers all of it — honestly, including the fact that for many solo travellers the £3.30 train is genuinely the right answer.
The DLR is the default: the station adjoins the terminal, and direct trains reach Bank in ~22 minutes for £3.30 off-peak / £3.90 peak (contactless or Oyster, Zone 3, every few minutes). Change at Canning Town for the Jubilee line, or connect to the Elizabeth line via Custom House or Canary Wharf for Liverpool Street, Paddington and beyond. By road it's London's shortest airport run — 20–45 minutes and the cheapest airport taxi in the capital: black cabs ~£25–£55 by meter, or a fixed-price transfer typically ~£40–£65 per vehicle for up to 8 people, met in arrivals. Solo with light luggage: take the train. Groups, big bags, West End hotels or tight schedules: the car costs less here than anywhere else, so the maths tips early.
No other London airport puts you on the network this fast: exit arrivals, and the DLR platforms are right there, lifts and all. The essentials:
| Detail | 2026 information |
|---|---|
| To Bank (the City) | Direct, ~22–23 min, trains every few minutes |
| Fare (contactless/Oyster, Z3→Z1) | £3.30 off-peak · £3.90 weekday peak (before 09:30) · Z1–3 daily cap £10.50 |
| For Canary Wharf, London Bridge, Waterloo, Westminster | Change at Canning Town (7 min) → Jubilee line |
| For Liverpool Street, Paddington, Heathrow | Connect to the Elizabeth line via Custom House or Canary Wharf |
| Hours | Early morning until ~00:30 — comfortably covering LCY's curfew-limited flight schedule |
| Accessibility | Step-free station with lifts; check step-free status at your destination stop |
Honest verdict: for one or two people with cabin-sized luggage heading anywhere near the DLR/Jubilee/Elizabeth network, this is the best airport-train value in London and you should take it. The cases where it isn't the answer are specific — and they're what the rest of this guide is for.
Because LCY is so close, the usual airport-taxi objection — cost — barely applies. This is the one London airport where the car is priced like a long city cab ride, not an intercity journey:
Where the car wins outright at LCY:
Local buses serve the Royal Docks, but there's no sensible direct route to the centre — reaching Central London by bus means multiple changes and up to two hours. With a £3.30 train attached to the terminal, this isn't a real option; we mention it only so you can stop wondering.
| DLR (+ connections) | Black cab (metered) | RUSHXO fixed transfer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | £3.30–£3.90 pp | £25–£55 by meter | ~£40–£65 per vehicle (1–8 people) |
| Time to the City | ~22–25 min + any onward leg | 20–40 min door to door | 20–40 min door to door |
| Time to the West End | ~40–50 min with a change | 30–50 min | 30–50 min |
| Luggage | Fine on DLR; harder at interchanges | In the cab | In the boot, driver assists |
| Booking | None — tap and go (don't forget the tap) | None — rank outside | Pre-booked, driver meets you in arrivals with a name board |
| Price certainty | Fixed fare | Meter runs with traffic | Locked at booking |
| Best for | Solo/duo, light bags, DLR-network destinations | Spontaneous door-to-door | Groups, luggage, West End, business schedules |
The DLR for most solo travellers — terminal-attached, ~22 minutes to Bank, £3.30–£3.90. Groups, heavy luggage, West End destinations or tight schedules: a taxi or fixed transfer on London's shortest, cheapest airport run.
~6–7 miles east of the City — the closest London airport by a wide margin (Heathrow ~15 miles, Gatwick ~28, Stansted ~40).
£3.30 off-peak / £3.90 weekday peak into Zone 1 by contactless or Oyster, £10.50 daily cap — and tap the validator before boarding, as there are no barriers.
~22–23 minutes direct, trains every few minutes; Canning Town (7 min) connects to the Jubilee line, Custom House/Canary Wharf to the Elizabeth line.
Black cabs ~£25–£45 to the City, £35–£55 to the West End; a fixed transfer typically ~£40–£65 per vehicle with meet-and-greet — exact quote at rushxo.com/book.
Until ~00:30 — and LCY's noise curfew means few flights land beyond it. For post-network destinations, pre-book a transfer.
The airport DLR station is fully step-free with lifts; check your destination station's status, or book an accessible transfer for door-to-door certainty.
Not to the centre — multiple changes, up to two hours. Train or car.
London City rewards arrivals with the shortest, simplest airport journey in the capital — and the fairest advice is direction-dependent on your circumstances, not your budget. Solo with a cabin bag: tap in (really — tap in) and ride the £3.30 train. With colleagues, cases, a West End hotel or a meeting on the clock: this is the one airport where the door-to-door car costs city-cab money, so take the version where someone's holding your name in arrivals.
Fixed prices typically £40–£65 per vehicle from London City Airport to any Central London address — meet-and-greet in arrivals, flight tracked, luggage in the boot, saloons to 8-seaters with child seats on request. Free cancellation up to 24 hours, no surge pricing, 24/7.
