Work backwards from your airline's cut-off, not the airport's distance. Door-to-terminal from Central London: City ~25–45 min (DLR from Bank), Heathrow 30–90 min (Elizabeth line £15.50 is the value pick), Gatwick 35–100 min (Thameslink ~£10–£18 over the £24 Express), Luton 60–110 min (coach to the terminal door, or train + £4.90 DART), Stansted 60–120 min (book the £9.45 advance train or £5 coach — walk-up is £23+). For dawn flights, only Luton has real overnight trains; Stansted has none. Times are realistic door-to-terminal ranges from Central London including legs to stations; add your airline's dwell time (typically 2 hrs short-haul, 3 long-haul) on top. Fares verified July 2026.
The only formula that matters on departure day:
Leave-by time = departure time − airline dwell time (2–3 hrs) − door-to-terminal time − buffer (15–30 min).
Example: 11:00 short-haul from Stansted = 11:00 − 2:00 − 1:30 − 0:30 = leave Central London by 07:00.
The DLR from Bank does it in 22 minutes and LCY's terminal is Britain's fastest — 60–90 minutes' dwell usually suffices. The £15.50 Elizabeth line is the value pick (serves T4); the £25 walk-up Express buys 15–25 minutes; the £5.90 Piccadilly is for the unhurried. City, by distance and terminal speed. Stansted is the toughest combination: furthest out, fare traps, one rail line, no night trains.
Luton: overnight trains/coaches. Stansted: 24/7 coach only. Gatwick: check limited overnight rail. Heathrow: coach on weeknights. Everywhere: a pre-booked transfer from your door, timed to the cut-off.
Bag drop typically 40–60 min before departure, gates 20–30 — airline rules; check yours and build backwards.
Value verdicts hold: Elizabeth line over Heathrow Express, Thameslink over Gatwick Express — but on departure day, verify works and first trains before any rail plan.
