The airport is about 40 miles north-east of central London up the M11, roughly 60 to 90 minutes by road, and it is Ryanair’s largest base, which is why its busiest hours are 5am to 7am and late evening, exactly when public transport is thinnest.
The terminal forecourt is an express set-down zone with a barrierless charge of £10 for up to 15 minutes, rising to £28 if a car stays longer (September 2026; check stanstedairport.com for changes). For pickups the driver uses the short-stay car park and walks to arrivals; there is no traditional taxi rank on the forecourt, so a pre-booked driver with a name board is the simplest way out of the building.
