Stansted Airport is about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Central London. The rail route into the city covers roughly 37 miles, and the Stansted Express completes it in about 47–50 minutes to London Liverpool Street, with departures every 15 minutes and one stop at Tottenham Hale (interchange for the Victoria line). By road it's 35–40 miles via the M11 — 60–90 minutes by taxi or transfer, door to door. Stansted is the furthest out of London's three major airports: Heathrow is ~15 miles from the centre and Gatwick ~28.
That's the answer Google's looking for. But if you're asking the question because you're planning a real journey, the station-to-station number is only a third of the story — because the train doesn't start at your gate and doesn't end at your door. Here's what those 40 miles actually look like, and how to cover them best.
| Airport | Distance from Central London | Rail journey (station to station) | Road journey (door to door) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stansted (STN) | ~40 miles / 64 km northeast | 47–50 min to Liverpool Street | 60–90 min |
| Gatwick (LGW) | ~28 miles / 45 km south | ~30 min to Victoria / London Bridge | 60–90 min |
| Heathrow (LHR) | ~15 miles / 24 km west | 15 min to Paddington | 40–70 min |
Notice something: by rail, Stansted's extra distance shows — its train takes three times longer than Heathrow's. By road, the gap nearly disappears: a Stansted transfer takes about the same as a Gatwick one, because the M11 is a fast, direct motorway run. Distance punishes the train option here more than the road one.
The Stansted Express is a good train — modern, every 15 minutes, from a station just 2–3 minutes' walk from the terminal. But "47 minutes to London" describes the middle of your journey, not the journey. Here's the honest door-to-door arithmetic:
| Stage | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gate → platform | 10–15 min | Passport, bags, the walk — Stansted's station is close, but not instant |
| Wait for departure | 0–15 min | Every 15 minutes daytime |
| Stansted → Liverpool Street | 47–50 min | The headline number — one stop at Tottenham Hale |
| Liverpool Street → your address | 15–40 min | Tube, bus or taxi + escalators, with your luggage |
| Realistic total, door to door | 70–100+ min | Longer for West End / west London destinations |
And three limits of the line worth knowing before you rely on it:
On price: booked well in advance the Express is decent value at ~£9.45 one-way. Bought at the machine after landing it's £23–£24.40 — the most common overpayment at Stansted — and that's before the onward Tube fare.
A fixed-price transfer covers the entire distance — arrivals hall to your front door — in one seat:
| Stansted Express (walk-up) | RUSHXO fixed-price transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Airport station → Liverpool Street only | Arrivals hall → your door, anywhere in London |
| Door-to-door time | 70–100+ min incl. onward leg | 60–90 min, no onward leg |
| Price | £23–£24.40 per person + onward fares | £70–£110 per vehicle (1–8 people) |
| Per person, group of 4 | £100+ before Tube fares | ~£20–£28 |
| Overnight | Not running | 24/7, no night surcharge |
| Engineering works | Replacement bus, much slower | Unaffected |
| Luggage | You carry it — train, escalators, Tube | Boot of the car, driver assists |
| Late flight | Your ticket, your problem | Flight tracked, driver waits, same price |
The pattern mirrors the distance maths above: the further the airport, the more the door-to-door option earns its keep — and Stansted is London's furthest. For a solo daytime traveller with an advance ticket and a City hotel, the train remains a fine, fast ride. For a group of three or four, a family with luggage, a 1 am landing, an early departure, or any address more than one easy Tube hop from Liverpool Street, covering all 40 miles in one fixed-price car is usually the faster door-to-door journey and the comparable-or-cheaper one per person.

For groups of 3+, night arrivals, heavy luggage or non-City destinations — often yes: £70–£110 fixed per vehicle covers the whole distance door to door in 60–90 minutes, around £20–£28 a head for a full car.
Stansted is 40 miles from London — a 47–50 minute train ride station to station, or a 60–90 minute drive door to door. The train covers the middle of that distance quickly; a fixed-price transfer covers all of it. Which is better depends on your group, your luggage, your landing time and where in London your bed actually is — and for more travellers than the headline numbers suggest, the answer over London's longest airport run is the car.
No platform dash, no Liverpool Street escalators, no onward Tube with suitcases. Book your fixed-price RUSHXO Stansted transfer — a licensed driver tracking your flight, meeting you in arrivals with your name, and driving you door to door across all 40 miles for one fixed fare.
