If you are flying into London for Christmas from the US, Canada or Europe, there are three things the guidebooks skip: the whole city's public transport stops for a day and a half from Christmas Eve night; most things are closed on the 25th; and the trains to the airport are under engineering works for much of the week after. None of it is a problem if you know before you land. Here is what to sort out before you fly and what to expect when you arrive.

Before you fly: ETA, currency, phone
- UK ETA. Visitors from the US, Canada, Australia and EU/EEA countries need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding. Apply on the official UK government app; it is usually approved within days but apply at least a week ahead in December. Our UK ETA and border guide has the detail.
- Money. Cards work everywhere including on the Tube; contactless is the norm; you need almost no cash. Our money and phone on arrival guide explains.
- Phone. An eSIM bought before you fly is cheapest; airport SIM kiosks are closed on 25 December.
- The airport transfer. Book it before you fly, especially for 24–26 December and 1 January, and give us the flight number so it is tracked.
Arriving 22–26 December: terminal reality, transport by day
| Arrival date | At the airport | Getting into London |
|---|---|---|
| 22–23 Dec | Very busy; long immigration queues at Heathrow T3 and T5 in the morning bank | Everything runs; expect crowds on the Tube with luggage |
| 24 Dec | Busy morning, quiet evening | Trains and Tube finish early — after about 20:00 a car is the only option that goes to the door |
| 25 Dec | Quiet, fewer shops open, slower baggage | No trains, Tube or buses. Pre-booked car or black cab rank only |
| 26 Dec (Saturday) | Busy departures | Tube on Sunday service; most trains off; airport expresses reduced or closed |
| 27 Dec – 3 Jan | Normal | Engineering works — check the works tracker |

Christmas Day and Boxing Day survival
Book Christmas lunch now — hotels and the few open restaurants fill by early December. Plan the 25th around walking: the parks, the river, a pub at noon. Do not plan on the Tube on the 25th; do not plan on National Rail on the 26th. If you want to be somewhere specific — a service at St Paul's, lunch in Richmond — pre-book the car. See what's open on Christmas Day and Christmas Day taxi.
Events worth booking now
- Winter Wonderland — free off-peak slots, paid peak; book for specific evenings.
- Christmas at Kew — sells out for the days between Christmas and New Year.
- Hogwarts in the Snow — Warner Bros. Studio Tour, timed tickets.
- New Year's Eve fireworks — ticketed, sold in tranches from autumn.
- the full calendar — hotel Christmas lunches and Boxing Day football.
Departing 27 December – 2 January: works and early flights
The week after Christmas is Network Rail's biggest engineering window; Paddington (Heathrow Express) and Euston have closed for several days in recent years. Morning transatlantic departures from Heathrow need a 06:00–07:00 pickup from central London, before the trains start on bank holidays. Fixed-fare cars run every day and are timed back from your check-in. See New Year's Day airport transfers.

Frequently asked questions
- Do Americans need a visa to visit London at Christmas?
- Not a visa, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applied for online before travel. The same applies to Canadians, Australians and EU citizens.
- Is London closed on Christmas Day?
- Shops, attractions and public transport are closed. Parks, churches, hotel restaurants and many pubs are open.
- Can I get from Heathrow to my hotel on Christmas Day?
- Only by road. No trains or Tube run on 25 December. Pre-book a fixed-fare car with your flight number and the driver meets you in arrivals.
- Is it worth visiting London at Christmas?
- Yes — the lights, the markets, the carol services and the empty streets on the 25th are all part of it. Plan around the transport gaps and book meals early.
