Bristol to Twickenham Stadium Taxi: Match-Day Drop-off and Ride Home
A Bristol to Twickenham Stadium taxi takes a group of supporters from home to the edge of the match-day road closures in about 2 hr 10 min on a clear run, a distance of around 111 miles, and brings everyone back the same night without anyone having to stay sober to drive. The ground on Whitton Road, which now carries the Allianz Stadium name, is the home of England rugby and holds around 82,000 people, so the streets around it behave very differently on a big day than on a quiet Tuesday.
From the M4 to the A316
The car leaves Bristol on the M4 and runs east past Swindon and Reading. Near Heathrow most drivers drop onto the M25 southbound for a few junctions and pick up the M3, which becomes the A316 at Sunbury and leads almost to the stadium's doorstep. The alternative is to stay on the M4 as far as Hayes and cut south on the A312. Either way, the last few miles are where a match day eats time: the A316 starts filling from late morning before an afternoon kick-off, as coaches, cars and fans on foot all converge on the same roundabouts.
Where the car can set you down
On international days the police and the stadium close Whitton Road and a ring of nearby streets for several hours either side of the game, and only vehicles with permits get through. A private-hire car will drop you outside that ring, so expect to finish on foot with the crowd. If your hospitality package includes a vehicle pass for one of the official car parks, send the details with your booking. Otherwise wear comfortable shoes and treat the walk as part of the build-up.
Getting away after the final whistle
When tens of thousands of people leave at once, Twickenham, Whitton and St Margarets stations run queue systems and the A316 moves at walking pace for a long while. The trick is not to try to meet the car at the stadium. Agree a pickup point with the driver before the match, somewhere outside the closures on the side of town facing the M3 or M4, and walk to it while the roads clear. A pickup time about an hour after the scheduled finish works for most groups, and you can message the driver if you are leaving early or staying for another drink. Reserving the trip home at the same time as the trip out trims 5% off both, which makes a saloon return £399.
Rail or road from Bristol
The train route needs a change at Reading: GWR from Temple Meads, then the South Western Railway service towards Waterloo, which stops at Twickenham. On an ordinary day that is straightforward. On a match day the Reading trains are packed, and after an evening kick-off you are watching the clock for the last connection west. The car makes most sense for four or more people sharing, for anyone starting outside the city, and for groups who want the day to run on their own timetable.
