Twickenham Stadium to Bristol by Car: West on the M4 After the Whistle
A taxi from Twickenham Stadium to Bristol is close to a straight line: across to the M4 and west for about 111 miles, around 2 hr 10 min in light traffic to Temple Meads. A saloon costs £230 for the whole car. Bath sits a few miles off the same motorway, and the fare to Bath Spa is in the table below as well.
Bears fans, England supporters and summer gigs
The West Country sends a lot of people to Twickenham: Bristol Bears supporters when their side reaches a Premiership final, England fans from across Somerset and Gloucestershire for internationals, and concert-goers in the summer. Most come up by train or on an organised coach. The car comes into its own for the journey home, when the station is at its busiest and nobody wants to be standing on a platform at Reading late at night waiting for a connection.
From the stadium to the M4
On event days the streets around the stadium close, so pickup is a short walk away at a place agreed beforehand. From there the driver usually heads north through Isleworth and Hounslow to join the M4 at junction 3, or, if that is jammed, takes the A316 and M3 to the M25 and joins the M4 at junction 4b. Westbound, the motorway passes Reading and Swindon. For central Bristol and Temple Meads the car leaves at junction 19 for the M32, while Clifton and the west of the city are often quicker via the M5 and the Portway along the Avon Gorge.
Train home: possible, but plan for crowds
Rail from Twickenham to Bristol does not need central London. South Western Railway trains towards Reading call at Twickenham, and Great Western trains from Reading run to Temple Meads. After a big game, though, the walk to the station, the queue to get on, a crowded train to Reading and the wait for a connection add up, and the later the finish, the fewer connections remain. For a family, or anyone who wants to be home in Bristol by mid-evening after an afternoon game, the car is usually the calmer option.
