How Barking and Dagenham gets to the airport: fares, routes and timings

Barking and Dagenham sits on the eastern edge of London, between the A13 and the A12, and it is closer to London City and Stansted than most Londoners realise. The borough was created in 1965 from the old boroughs of Barking and Dagenham; today it runs from the busy town centre at Barking station through the huge interwar Becontree estate to Chadwell Heath and the new Barking Riverside district by the Thames.

Because the whole borough is outer London, fares here carry no central-London surcharges. The quickest airport run is London City, the most popular is Heathrow – a long cross-London drive best done early – and Stansted is a straightforward run up the M11.

The engine adds 20% for Friday journeys, Saturday and Sunday pickups before noon, Monday–Thursday trips into London 07:00–10:00 and out of London 16:00–19:00, and a seasonal supplement from 17 December to 1 January. Why two Barking and Dagenham addresses can price differently

Barking and Dagenham addresses are outer-London postcodes, so there is no central surcharge on these fares, and the Congestion Charge allowance only appears on the St Pancras run because the station itself is in a central postcode. What moves the price is distance, plus the airport drop-off charge at the airport end. Runs where neither end is an airport or inner London – Ebbsfleet, Ashford and Birmingham International – are priced on the engine's out-of-town rate, which is about 10% above the London rate for the same mileage.
