Bexley to the airports and Eurostar, fixed and fully priced

Bexley is London's south-eastern corner, bordered by Kent and the Thames, and its road links point outwards: the A2 to the M25 and Kent, and the A206 to the Dartford Crossing and Essex. That makes Gatwick, Stansted (via Dartford) and the Kent stations unusually easy, while Heathrow and Luton are long runs across or around London.

The borough takes in Bexleyheath and its Broadway, the Victorian suburbs of Sidcup and Welling, the riverside towns of Erith and Belvedere and the village feel of Old Bexley. All are outer-London postcodes.

What changes the fare in Bexley

Bexley addresses are outer-London postcodes, so there is no central surcharge on these fares, and the Congestion Charge allowance only appears on the St Pancras run because the station itself is in a central postcode. What moves the price is distance, plus the airport drop-off charge at the airport end. Runs where neither end is an airport or inner London – Ebbsfleet, Ashford and Birmingham International – are priced on the engine's out-of-town rate, which is about 10% above the London rate for the same mileage.

Bexley to London's five airports – route guides

From Bexley, the order of the airports by drive time is not always what the map suggests. Route by route:

Bexley to Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is Bexley's furthest London airport in time. Drivers choose between the South Circular across south London and the M25 clockwise from junction 2 depending on traffic; both avoid central London.

  • Road miles: 34.8
  • Usual time: 65–90 min
  • Usual route: A2 and the South Circular to the A316 and M4, or the M25 clockwise
  • Public transport alternative: Southeastern into London Bridge or Abbey Wood, then the Elizabeth line direct to Heathrow.

Bexley to Gatwick Airport

Gatwick is a straightforward run: the A2 to the M25, clockwise to junction 7 and down the M23. Early-morning departures are quick and predictable.

  • Road miles: 31.6
  • Usual time: 45–60 min
  • Usual route: A2 to the M25, then the M23 south
  • Public transport alternative: Southeastern to London Bridge, then Thameslink to Gatwick Airport.

Bexley to Luton Airport

Luton is a long run: north over the Dartford Crossing, anticlockwise round the M25 and up the M1. The crossing charge is included in the fixed fare.

  • Road miles: 49
  • Usual time: 70–95 min
  • Usual route: Dartford Crossing and the M25 anticlockwise to the M1
  • Public transport alternative: Southeastern to London Bridge, then Thameslink direct to Luton Airport Parkway.

Bexley to Stansted Airport

For Stansted the car heads straight for the Dartford Crossing and up the M25 and M11. It is often quicker than reaching Heathrow.

  • Road miles: 40.8
  • Usual time: 45–65 min
  • Usual route: Dartford Crossing, M25 anticlockwise and the M11
  • Public transport alternative: Southeastern to London Bridge, then into Liverpool Street for the Stansted Express.

Bexley to London City Airport

London City is close, on the north bank opposite Woolwich. Drivers pick the river crossing with the shortest queue at the time.

  • Road miles: 7.9
  • Usual time: 20–35 min
  • Usual route: A2016 through Thamesmead, then the Woolwich Ferry or the Blackwall/Silvertown tunnels
  • Public transport alternative: Elizabeth line from Abbey Wood to Custom House, or Southeastern to Woolwich Arsenal and the DLR.

Bexley to England's five international stations

  • Usual time: 45–65 min
  • Usual route: A2 through Blackheath and the Old Kent Road, then over Tower Bridge
  • By train instead: Southeastern to London Bridge, then Thameslink to St Pancras.

  • Usual route: A2 and the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel, then the A12
  • By train instead: Elizabeth line from Abbey Wood to Stratford.

  • Road miles: 9.8
  • Usual time: 15–25 min
  • Usual route: A2 east to the Ebbsfleet junction
  • By train instead: Southeastern from Bexleyheath or Sidcup towards Dartford, then a bus or taxi to Ebbsfleet.

  • Road miles: 49.5
  • Usual time: 55–70 min
  • Usual route: A2, M25 junction 2 to 3, then the M20 to junction 9
