Southend Airport Train vs Taxi 2026 – Liverpool Street Line or Fixed-Fare Car?
Southend has the best rail link of any London airport that is not Heathrow: a station next to the terminal and a direct train to Stratford and Liverpool Street. It also has the widest catchment of towns the train does not serve. This guide compares the two honestly, by journey.
Cost and time, side by side
Train fares are typical advance or off-peak singles; taxi fares are fixed saloon prices for up to four passengers, agreed at booking.

| Journey | Train | Taxi (saloon) | Taxi time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southend Airport to Liverpool Street | about 55–65 min, roughly £15–£25 | from £198 | 70–100 min |
| Southend Airport to Stratford | about 50 min | from £170 | 60–85 min |
| Southend Airport to Chelmsford | change at Shenfield, about 55 min | from £84 | 30–40 min |
| Southend Airport to Romford | change at Shenfield or Stratford, about 50 min | from £126 | 40–55 min |
| Southend Airport to Bromley or Kent | two or three changes, 2 h+ | from £159 | 60–80 min |

When the train is right
One or two people, a cabin bag each, going to the City, Stratford or somewhere on the Elizabeth line, on a weekday between about 06:00 and 22:00. The train is frequent, cheap and immune to the A127. Buy an advance single and it beats any car on price.
When the taxi is right
Three or more people, hold luggage, any destination off the Liverpool Street line, the first departures before the train fits, arrivals after 22:30 when the service thins and then stops, and connections to Stansted, Heathrow or Gatwick. A family of four to Chelmsford pays £84 for the car against four tickets and a change at Shenfield, and gets home in 35 minutes. From Kent or south London the train is not a realistic option at all. EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask
How early should I get to a European airport for my flight home?
ABTA advises arriving at least two hours before departure, because the EES exit check can add time at busy airports.
Will I go through EES at Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted?
No. UK airports do not run EES. When you fly to a Schengen country, you register on arrival at the European airport, and your exit is recorded when you fly home.
Do children have to register for EES?
Yes, every non-EU traveller gets a record, babies included. Children under 12 are photographed but not fingerprinted.
Do I need ETIAS as well?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.
EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the EU Travel to Europe site before you travel.
