Southampton cruise port transfers start with one question: which terminal is your ship using? The QEII and Ocean terminals in the Eastern Docks are reached through Dock Gate 4, while City, Horizon and Mayflower in the Western Docks are reached through Dock Gate 10, and the two gates are far enough apart that heading for the wrong one costs real time. A saloon for the Heathrow Terminal 5 to Western Docks run costs £152, roughly 1 hr 20 min when the M25 and M3 are flowing.

Go by the terminal printed on your own boarding documents, not by the one a friend used last year: cruise lines move ships between terminals from one season to the next. Put the terminal name in your booking and the driver goes through the right gate to the terminal's car drop-off, where porters take your tagged cases to the ship and you walk in carrying only hand luggage.

From the M25 to the dockside

From Heathrow, the drive is a short stretch of the M25 to the M3, then the M3 south-west past Basingstoke and Winchester. Where the motorway runs out on the edge of Southampton, the final miles depend on the gate: the Western Docks are normally reached via the M27 and M271 towards Redbridge and Millbrook, the Eastern Docks through the city centre to the waterfront. From central London, drivers usually take the A316 to join the M3 at Sunbury and skip the M25 altogether; a Mayfair hotel to the Eastern Docks is about 1 hr 50 min on clear roads. From Gatwick it is a cross-country run around the M25 and down the M3, about 1 hr 45 min.

Many ships sail at the weekend, so note that a pick-up before midday on a Saturday or Sunday attracts our 20% weekend-morning supplement, and so does any Friday run to a pre-cruise hotel. It is already in the quote, so nothing changes on the day.

Arriving by air on sailing day

Plenty of passengers from North America and Australia land at Heathrow on an overnight flight and drive straight to the port. That works when the flight arrives with hours in hand, but a delay on sailing day leaves no slack at all, so arriving the day before and sleeping near Heathrow or in Southampton removes most of the risk. We can collect from either. When you do fly in, we watch the flight, and your driver stands in the arrivals hall holding your name, adjusted to whenever the wheels actually touch down.

Check the paperwork early as well: citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia and most other countries that visit Britain without a visa need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly, even if they are only in the country for a few hours before the ship leaves.

How many cases, which car

Cruise packing runs heavier than an airport weekend: formal wear, shoes for every deck, sometimes a large case per person for each week at sea. Our saloon seats four, but its boot holds just two large suitcases. A couple with four big cases between them needs the MPV; two couples travelling together, or a family, fit better in a Mercedes V-Class, or in the 9-seater minibus if there are up to eight of you. Fit the cruise line's luggage tags at home or in the hotel, so the cases can go straight to the porters when the car pulls up.

The morning you leave the ship

Ships come alongside early, but passengers leave in groups through the morning, and you usually learn your slot only on board a day or two before. Book the pick-up for the time your group is due off, then send a WhatsApp message once you have your cases. For a flight home the same day, an afternoon departure from Heathrow leaves a sensible margin, and our page on the Southampton cruise terminals to Heathrow transfer covers that run in detail. Southampton sailing-day questions

Can the car drop me at the dock gate so I can walk in?
It is not worth it. The terminals sit some way inside the port, the gates are built for vehicles rather than people pulling heavy cases, and cars carrying cruise passengers are let through to the terminal drop-off. Give the terminal name in the booking and the driver takes you all the way.
Is the train from Waterloo a sensible alternative?
For light packers, yes: South Western Railway runs from London Waterloo to Southampton Central, and a short taxi ride takes you on to the terminal. With heavy cruise cases, the hard part is lifting bags on and off trains and through two stations, which a door-to-door car avoids.
What if my ship is moved to a different terminal?
Update the booking as soon as the cruise line tells you. A move within the same docks changes little, but a switch between the Eastern and Western Docks means a different gate and a different final approach, so the driver needs to know before setting off.
How early should we reach the terminal?
Aim to arrive within the check-in window shown on your boarding pass. Turning up hours before it usually means a longer wait in the terminal rather than boarding sooner, while cutting it to the end of the window leaves no room for a slow M3, so plan the pick-up time around the start of your slot.
