First: call the cruise line, not the terminal
The terminal cannot help once the ship has cast off. Your cruise line has a shoreside emergency number — it is on your booking confirmation and usually staffed 24 hours. Call it before you do anything else. They will tell you the next port of call and whether they can arrange a "downline" boarding.
Have ready: booking reference, cabin number, passport, and the phone you booked on. The line will ask for all four.
Second: work out where the ship stops next
From Southampton, most itineraries make their first call within 24–36 hours — often Cherbourg, Le Havre, Guernsey, Cork or Vigo. Some Mediterranean sailings run two sea days first, which means the next realistic boarding point may be Gibraltar or Lisbon.
You are allowed to join the ship at a later port, but you must tell the line in advance so they can clear you with immigration and hold your cabin.
Third: get moving
Almost every downline boarding starts with getting to an airport — usually Heathrow or Gatwick — for a same-day or next-morning flight. That is where we come in.
- Southampton to Heathrow: around 70 minutes, fixed fare, any hour.
- Southampton to Gatwick: around 90 minutes.
- Southampton to a Channel port (Portsmouth, Dover) if you are chasing a near-continent call.

What it costs, and what your insurance may cover

How to not do this again
- Cruise check-in usually closes 90 minutes before departure, not at departure.
- Southampton has four terminals. Confirm which one before you set off — they are miles apart.
- If you are flying in on the day of the cruise, do not. Fly in the night before; the industry advice is universal for a reason.
