A Heathrow layover is only wasted if you spend it in the terminal. Windsor Castle is 25 minutes away, Kew Gardens 30, Westminster 45. The rule is simple: be back at the terminal three hours before a long-haul departure (two for short-haul), and let the driver, not the Tube, control the timing. Here is what fits in four, six and eight hours, with fixed prices.

First, the arithmetic

Count from scheduled landing: 45–60 minutes to clear immigration and (if you have it) collect bags; the tour; then be at the departure terminal 3 hours before a long-haul flight, 2 hours for short-haul. A 6-hour layover therefore gives about two hours out; an 8-hour layover gives four. If your bags are checked through and you have a transit visa or ETA where required, you can leave the airport — check the Heathrow connections pages and our Heathrow connection time guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave Heathrow during a layover?
Yes if you have the right to enter the UK (an ETA for most visitors from the US, Canada, EU and Australia) and enough time. Allow an hour to clear arrivals and be back three hours before a long-haul departure.
What can I do on a 6-hour Heathrow layover?
Windsor Castle or Kew Gardens — each is 25–30 minutes away and gives you about 75 minutes inside with a driver waiting.
How much does a Heathrow layover tour cost?
From about £150 fixed for a Windsor or Kew loop in a saloon including waiting; from £280 for a four-hour London or Windsor-and-Eton plan.
