Gatwick ⇄ West Kent — the journey, honestly
Two ways across, chosen live: the A264 cross-country through East Grinstead, Ashurst Wood and Langton Green into Tunbridge Wells (45–55 minutes) and on to Crowborough and Tonbridge — or the M23, M25 and A21 loop for Sevenoaks (40–50), Westerham and Otford. East Grinstead itself is a 20–25 minute hop; Edenbridge 30–35. Pretty roads, honest minutes.
And the train? Here's West Kent's long-standing grievance, stated plainly: Gatwick is the region's nearest major airport, and yet no direct rail service connects them — Gatwick sits on the Brighton Main Line, Tunbridge Wells on the Hastings line, and the two only meet via changes at Redhill and Tonbridge or a loop up toward London and back down. With a family and hold luggage that's commonly 90 minutes or more, times a ticket per person, to arrive at a station that still isn't home. The car does the whole thing in 45–55 minutes, one seat, front door — which is why the school-run belt from Sevenoaks to Crowborough has always driven to Gatwick, and why the pre-booked car with the seats already fitted is the version of that habit that doesn't involve airport parking.
