Section 021. Why Gatwick disruption looks different from Heathrow

Before any of the incidents in this guide make sense, you need to understand Gatwick's defining operational facts.

One runway, used intensively. Gatwick has technically two runways but operates them as a single runway — the second is too close to the main runway to be used simultaneously, and serves only as a backup if the main runway is closed. In practice, every flight uses one strip of tarmac. By contrast, Heathrow has two parallel runways used in mixed mode all day.

One runway, but the busiest in the world. Gatwick extracts more movements per hour from its single runway than any other single-runway airport on the planet. In 2019, the airport hit a peak of 55 movements per hour on one runway — a level of efficiency that requires extraordinary operational discipline.

Lower hub-airline concentration. EasyJet is Gatwick's largest airline, but its share is around 40% — significantly less concentrated than BA's 50%+ at Heathrow. Add British Airways' Gatwick-based EuroFlyer subsidiary, Virgin Atlantic, TUI, Wizz Air, Norse Atlantic, Vueling and others, and Gatwick has a more diverse airline mix.

Different ownership story. Gatwick was sold by BAA in 2009 to a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners. GIP invested heavily in operational improvements through the 2010s. The airport is now owned by VINCI Airports (which acquired a majority in 2019). The ownership churn has, broadly, been positive — each new owner has invested in operational capability.

Less media attention. Gatwick is Britain's second-busiest airport, but the UK media's aviation reporting is heavily Heathrow-centric. When something goes wrong at Gatwick, it usually gets less national attention than the same event at Heathrow.

The cumulative effect: Gatwick's disruption events tend to be less catastrophic than Heathrow's, recover faster, and get less press coverage. The exception is the December 2018 drone event, which broke all of these rules.

Section 032. December 2018: The drone event that shut Gatwick for three days

If you read only one section of this guide, read this one. The Gatwick drone event of December 2018 is the most consequential single airport disruption in modern British aviation history. It changed UK drone legislation, drove a global wave of counter-drone investment, and remains — uncomfortably — an unsolved mystery.

What happened

Wednesday 19 December 2018, just after 21:00. A security officer at Gatwick reported seeing two drones near the airport perimeter — one over a vehicle, one over the perimeter fence. Within thirty minutes, six further sightings were reported, five of them from police officers. The airport's only operational runway was closed at 21:03.

For the next three days, the runway was reopened and reclosed repeatedly as new drone sightings were reported. Each time the airport prepared to resume operations, another sighting would force another suspension. By the morning of Friday 21 December, the airport had operated for only minutes across the previous 36 hours.

The cumulative impact: - Around 1,000 flights cancelled or diverted over the three-day period. - Approximately 140,000 passengers affected — directly stranded, indirectly delayed, or unable to begin journeys. - The four busiest days of the Christmas travel season disrupted. - EasyJet alone reported £15 million in costs from the event, having cancelled around 400 of its own flights affecting 82,000 passengers.

The drones were sighted at intervals across all three days, with reports continuing as late as 9 AM each morning before pausing during the day. The pattern suggested either a deliberate, knowledgeable operator — or a wave of false sightings amid heightened tension. Police later said they believed the original sightings were of an unauthorised drone, while some later sightings may have been of a police drone deployed during the response.

The investigation

Sussex Police led an 18-month investigation costing £800,000 and involving five police forces.

Some commentators have suggested the event may have been caused by mass panic rather than a real drone — pointing to the absence of any photographic or radar evidence, and the tendency of stressed observers to misidentify birds, balloons or police drones as the original threat. Sussex Police, as of late 2020, continued to maintain the disruption was "a malicious attack" by a real drone operator.

The honest position in 2026: nobody knows for certain what happened, who did it, or why. The event remains officially open as an unsolved case.

Why Gatwick's response was so slow

The post-event analysis identified several systemic problems with the response that have shaped UK aviation policy ever since.

No counter-drone capability. In December 2018, Gatwick had no operational counter-drone technology deployed. The airport had begun a drone detection programme in 2016, but no detection or neutralisation system was active. Industry analysts later noted that drone disruption had been "predictable, if not inevitable" — and yet no UK airport had effective counter-drone defences at scale.

Unclear command and control. The response involved Sussex Police, the airport itself, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Department for Transport, the Home Office, and eventually the British Army. The chain of command for who could authorise what response measures was unclear. The army was eventually deployed with "specialist equipment" (widely understood to be RF jamming and detection capability, though the exact equipment was not disclosed).

No tested playbook. The airport's risk register reportedly identified drones as a potential threat, but the response plan had not been comprehensively rehearsed. When the event occurred, decisions were being made in real time under extreme pressure.

Precautionary closure was the only safe option. Whatever the actual threat level, the safety risk of operating a runway with a possible drone in the vicinity was unacceptable. Each new sighting forced a fresh closure. The airport could not differentiate real sightings from false ones in real time.

What changed

The December 2018 event was the catalyst for one of the largest counter-drone procurement waves in global aviation history.

The reforms have not eliminated drone disruption — as the Heathrow events of 2019, 2025 and 2026 demonstrate — but they have substantially reduced the duration of typical drone-related closures. The December 2018 three-day shutdown remains an outlier.

The traveller lesson

The Gatwick drone event teaches the same lesson as every other disruption in this guide: when the worst happens, the systems that absorb the shock are the systems you've prepared in advance. Travellers caught in the December 2018 event spent up to three nights at the airport or in surrounding hotels. Those who had pre-booked ground transport could at least leave the airport when they decided to give up; those without spent hours queuing for taxis in winter weather.

Section 043. April 2019: The drone aftershock

Less than five months after the December event, Gatwick was briefly closed again. On the evening of 28 April 2019, an unconfirmed drone sighting near the airfield forced a temporary runway closure.

The 2019 event was very different in scale — just 75 minutes of disruption, with three flights diverted to Stansted (which subsequently returned). But the symbolic impact mattered. Gatwick had spent the months after December 2018 talking publicly about new counter-drone investments. The April 2019 incident exposed that the new measures, while reducing the likelihood of a repeat three-day shutdown, had not eliminated the possibility of brief drone-related closures.

The new normal was set: drone sightings would cause minutes-to-hours of disruption, not days. That has broadly held through 2026.


Section 054. August 2024: The cable theft and runway lighting failure

A less famous but operationally fascinating Gatwick disruption: the August 2024 runway lighting failure caused by alleged theft of high-value copper cable from airfield infrastructure.

On the morning of 25 August 2024, Gatwick reported that runway approach lighting on the eastern approach to Runway 26L was inoperative. The cause was traced to damage to a buried cable serving the lighting array. Initial investigations suggested the damage was consistent with theft — the cable contained valuable copper, and parts of it had been removed cleanly rather than damaged by accident.

The operational impact: - Approach lighting was unavailable for the affected runway end during the period of repair. - Flight operations continued but with reduced operational flexibility, particularly during low-visibility periods. - Some inbound flights diverted during periods of poor visibility, and a number of cancellations cascaded through the day. - The total disruption was concentrated over 36 hours.

The event highlighted a less-discussed vulnerability of major airports: the kilometres of buried cable that support the airfield's operational infrastructure are, at least in theory, vulnerable to theft, vandalism or deliberate sabotage. The economic value of the copper in airfield cable is significant; the operational value is much higher.

Cable theft incidents at airports, while rare, are not unprecedented. London City and Manchester have both reported attempted thefts in the past decade. The 2024 Gatwick event was the most operationally consequential.


Section 065. May 2017: BA IT outage at Gatwick

The May 2017 British Airways IT outage is best known as a Heathrow event — BA's main hub took the largest visible share of the cancellations. But Gatwick was simultaneously affected, and the Gatwick portion of the disruption has been under-reported.

At the time, British Airways operated a substantial Gatwick operation, primarily on short-haul European and leisure routes. When BA's data centre suffered the catastrophic UPS failure on the morning of Saturday 27 May 2017, both London airports were paralysed for BA operations.

Gatwick-specific impact: - Approximately 80 BA flights cancelled on 27 May at Gatwick alone. - Further cancellations on 28 and 29 May as the IT recovery extended. - Tens of thousands of Gatwick BA passengers affected, on top of the larger Heathrow numbers. - Other Gatwick airlines unaffected — EasyJet, Norwegian, TUI and others continued to operate normally, which produced the unusual scene of one airline (BA) in chaos while the rest of the airport functioned.

Passengers booked on the unaffected airlines walked through normal Gatwick operations while a few terminals away, BA passengers slept on the floor. The same storm system that closed Heathrow for five days closed Gatwick for two. Gatwick's single runway closed on Saturday 18 December and reopened, on a limited basis, on Monday 20 December — a full day before Heathrow.

Why did Gatwick recover faster?

Newer ownership, fresh investment. Gatwick had been sold by BAA to Global Infrastructure Partners in 2009. The new ownership had invested £1 million in additional snow ploughs in the months before December 2010 — investment that would prove well-timed.

Spare capacity for recovery. Gatwick operated at around 83% slot utilisation in 2010, compared to Heathrow's 98%. When the snow cleared, Gatwick had the slot capacity to flush its backlog. Heathrow did not.

Single runway, simpler operation. With one runway to clear instead of two, Gatwick's snow-clearing operation was operationally simpler than Heathrow's, even though both airports had similar snow accumulations.

The constraint is not arbitrary. Gatwick technically has two runways — Runway 08R/26L (the main runway) and Runway 08L/26R (the secondary). The problem is that they are only 198 metres apart.
