A family of four with a 7 am long-haul departure has no train option at all, because the first services don't reach Heathrow early enough.

For most daytime flights in 2026, the Elizabeth Line offers the best balance of price (£15.50), speed (30–40 minutes) and reach — it picks you up from Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street or Paddington and runs direct to every terminal. Worked example: a 10:00 long-haul flight means being at the terminal by 07:00. Allow 40 minutes on the Elizabeth Line plus time to reach the station, plus the buffer — you should be walking out of your hotel by 06:00–06:15. By road in the morning peak, leave by 05:45.

The Heathrow Express departs London Paddington every 15 minutes from around 05:10, reaching Terminals 2 & 3 in 15 minutes and Terminal 5 in about 20. For Terminal 4, change at Heathrow Central for the free connection.

The Elizabeth Line is the reverse journey's quiet hero: instead of you getting to one departure station, it comes to you — boarding at Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street or Paddington — and runs direct to the airport, including Terminal 4.
Roughly 30–40 minutes: about 30 from Paddington, ~35 from Bond Street, ~40 from Farringdon or Liverpool Street.
Not every westbound Elizabeth Line train goes to Heathrow — some terminate elsewhere, and airport trains alternate between Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 destinations (both call at Terminals 2 & 3). Check the destination on the platform display and the front of the train. If the first airport train goes to the "wrong" terminal for you, it's usually still faster to board and change at Heathrow Central than to wait.
Verdict: The best overall option for most daytime flights — cheap enough, fast enough, and it starts where you actually are.
The Piccadilly Line runs west to all Heathrow terminals from King's Cross, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park, Knightsbridge, South Kensington and Earl's Court.

Verdict: Great for light packers on a budget with a midday or afternoon flight. Risky as your only plan on a weekend, and miserable with big luggage at 08:30.
National Express (plus Megabus and FlixBus) runs from London Victoria Coach Station to Heathrow's Central Bus Station (for T2/T3), with services to Terminals 4 and 5.
Pros: often the cheapest option; luggage-friendly; ideal if you're staying near Victoria, Pimlico or Belgravia.
Cons: the least predictable timing of any option — one M4 incident and your buffer is gone. Give a coach far more slack than a train when a flight depends on it. Limited pre-dawn departures.
Verdict: Fine for flexible, budget-minded travellers near Victoria with generous time margins. Not the tool for tight connections.
Apps will happily take you to Heathrow, and off-peak they're decent value at £40–£70. The outbound catches are worth knowing:

Hail one in the street, find a rank, or book by phone — black cabs run 24/7, carry five passengers plus luggage, and every cab is wheelchair accessible. Expect a metered £52–£97 to Heathrow depending on pick-up point and traffic, over 40–70 minutes.
Verdict: Utterly dependable and iconic, but the most expensive way to the airport. Best when plans change last-minute and nothing is booked.

Hidden costs to factor in: the Tube or taxi leg to Paddington if using the Express (£2.90–£15), the £7 drop-off charge if a friend drives you, ULEZ for non-compliant cars, and — the biggest hidden cost of all — rebooking fees if a "cheap" option makes you miss your flight.

The first trains from Central London reach Heathrow around 05:30–06:00, which is too late for many 06:00–07:00 departures once check-in cut-offs are counted. A transfer booked the night before collects you at 03:30 or 04:30 without fuss. The Night Tube (Fri/Sat) and N9 night bus are the budget fallbacks.

The Heathrow Express starts from Paddington around 05:10, and Elizabeth and Piccadilly line first trains reach the airport around 05:30–06:00 — too late for many of the day's first departures. Overnight options:
