A London to Glasgow taxi runs on motorway for nearly the whole distance: the M1 and M6 through the Midlands and the North West, then the A74(M) and M74 from the Border into the city. It is about 402 miles from Euston to Glasgow Central and roughly 7 hr 30 min of driving in light traffic, and a saloon, seating four, is £741. Add stops and it fills a long day, so it is a trip people book for a particular reason, and the comparison below helps you check yours.

The route: through the Midlands, over Shap and up the M74

From Euston the car joins the M1 at Staples Corner and follows it north to Rugby, where the M6 takes over. The West Midlands and the stretch past Stoke towards Manchester are the usual congestion points; after Preston the traffic tends to ease. North of Lancaster the M6 climbs through the Lune Gorge and over Shap, an exposed, high stretch where winter snow and strong crosswinds can slow or occasionally close the road. Beyond Carlisle the motorway crosses the Border near Gretna and continues as the A74(M) over Beattock Summit, becoming the M74 for the run down the Clyde valley into Glasgow.

Service areas worth stopping at

Most passengers want a break every two hours or so, and the M6 has plenty of service areas. Tebay, in the Lune Gorge north of Kendal, is a favourite because it is family-run with a farm shop and a proper kitchen rather than the usual chains. On the Scottish side, Annandale Water on the A74(M) breaks up the last long stretch through Dumfriesshire. Let us know when you book if there is somewhere you specifically want to stop, or if a passenger needs more frequent breaks.

Where the motorway ends: central Glasgow and the West End

The M74 now runs right up to the M8 by the Kingston Bridge, so once the motorway ends, the city centre, the West End and the riverside are all close. Glasgow Central is on Gordon Street, Queen Street station is a few blocks north-east, and the University of Glasgow sits above Kelvingrove Park in the West End. The SEC and the OVO Hydro are on the north bank of the Clyde, where traffic builds heavily before big concerts, so allow extra time if you are heading to a show on the night you arrive. Glasgow Airport is further west along the M8, near Paisley.

What the Glasgow run costs

Every price is for the whole vehicle. Eight passengers can share one 9-seater minibus for £786, which is how a family reunion or a sports club travels together on a single fare. If you land at Heathrow, the M25 takes you round to the northbound motorways without touching central London; a saloon from Terminal 5 costs £737, and because the flight is tracked the driver is already in arrivals when you come through. Friday journeys, and Saturday or Sunday departures before 12:00, are priced 20% higher, and booking the southbound leg along with the northbound one makes the pair 5% cheaper.

Before you set off for Glasgow

What happens if the M6 over Shap is closed by snow?
The driver checks traffic and weather before setting off and during the trip. If the motorway is shut, the car can divert to the A1 on the east side and cross to Glasgow from there, which adds time. In winter, build some slack into any plans for the evening you arrive.
Can you drop us at the Hydro for a concert?
Yes. Give the venue and the show time when you book. Roads around the SEC campus get very busy in the hour before doors open, so aim to arrive in Glasgow with time to spare, and consider being dropped at your hotel first if you have luggage.
How much can we bring for a student move to Glasgow?
Two large cases is the limit in a saloon, so a year's worth of belongings rarely fits. An MPV takes a full move for one student with a parent travelling too, and a 9-seater minibus suits two students sharing the journey. List the cases and boxes in the booking.
Is it better to take the sleeper?
If you are travelling light and want to arrive early without losing a day, the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston is hard to beat. The car is the better choice when you have a lot of luggage or a pet, when someone cannot manage stations, or when a group would otherwise need several cabins.
