City Airport ⇄ Docklands — the journey, honestly
Tiny distances, quick roads: the Lower Lea Crossing and Aspen Way put Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs 10–15 minutes from the terminal; Stratford and the Olympic Park are 15–20 via the A13 or A12; Greenwich 15–20 through the Blackwall Tunnel; Wapping, Shadwell and Bow 15–25. City Airport's terminal is small enough that you can be kerbside within minutes of the seatbelt sign going off.
And the DLR? Let's not insult anyone: the DLR is City Airport's best feature — direct to Canary Wharf, Stratford and Bank, frequent, cheap, and a solo traveller with a cabin bag should simply take it. We'd tell you that at the kerb. The car earns its place exactly where the DLR's virtues stop counting: a family with hold luggage and a buggy facing platform lifts and carriage gaps; a group of four whose tickets start approaching the fixed fare anyway; an address in Wapping or Greenwich that turns "direct" into "direct, then a walk"; or a business arrival who's been navigating since 5am and would like to stop. One fare, one seat, door to door — sometimes the shortest journeys are the ones you most want handled.
