The cut-off is not the departure time
For most lines sailing from Southampton, check-in closes 90 minutes before departure, and boarding closes 60 minutes before. A 16:30 sailing means being inside the terminal by 15:00 — not 16:25.
If you are inside that window: call the line now. They can sometimes hold check-in for a few minutes if they know you are ten minutes away. They cannot hold anything if the first they hear from you is at the gangway.
Make sure you are heading to the right terminal
Southampton has four cruise terminals, and they are not walking distance from one another:
- Mayflower (SO15) — the largest, western docks
- Ocean (SO14) — eastern docks
- QEII (SO14) — eastern docks
- City Cruise Terminal (SO15) — western docks
Arriving at the wrong one costs fifteen to twenty-five minutes you almost certainly do not have. The terminal name is on your e-ticket.
The traffic that catches people out
The M3 and M27 back up on Saturday mornings — the peak cruise turnaround day. The docks themselves have a single approach road that queues with coaches, taxis and private cars all arriving in the same hour.
