Why dedicated couriers matter in aviation

Aviation buyers pay several times the price of a parcel service to move a single small box, and from the outside that looks irrational. It is not. Parcel networks are superbly built — for a job that is structurally different from the one aviation needs doing. Here is where the mismatch sits, and when a network is genuinely the better choice.

A structural mismatch, not a service-quality problem

It is tempting to frame this as networks being careless and dedicated carriers being diligent. That is not the argument, and it is not true. Parcel networks are extraordinary pieces of engineering that move millions of items a day at a cost per parcel no dedicated vehicle could approach.

The issue is that a network is optimised for something aviation does not need, and cannot easily provide what aviation does.

Understanding this properly matters commercially, because it tells you when not to use a dedicated vehicle as well as when to. Routine consumables, non-urgent stock replenishment and anything where a day makes no difference should go on a network. It will cost a fraction as much and do the job perfectly.

Reason one: the cut-off does not care about your aircraft

Every network runs on a timetable, and the timetable is what makes the economics work. Collections feed a depot, the depot feeds a trunk, the trunk feeds another depot, and each stage has a time by which items must arrive.

Reason two: once it is in the hub, it is in the hub

Sortation is where a network's efficiency comes from — and where an individual consignment becomes almost impossible to influence.

That last point is more damaging than it appears. An engineering desk deciding whether to wait for a part or swap the aircraft needs a forecast, not a history. "Scanned at hub, 04:12" does not answer the question being asked.

The test worth applying. Ask what a day of delay actually costs on this specific movement. No. They are highly efficient at what they are designed for — large volumes of small items at very low cost per parcel. The difficulty is that aviation typically needs the opposite: a single high-value item, unplanned, at any hour, arriving by a specific moment.

What is the single biggest limitation of a network for AOG work?

Operating hours, closely followed by cut-offs. Aviation defects are frequently found in the evening and rectified overnight. A service that collects until 17:00 and delivers the following day cannot participate in that at all.

Why does sortation matter for aircraft parts?
